7-20-4 1874 Robusto Especial (5 1/2 x 52)

Video review HERE.

1874 follows the initial 7-20-4 brand that debuted in 2009.

Three 1874 Series is offered in these sizes:
6 x 46 Corona Especial
5-1/4 x 52 Robusto Especial
6 x 54 Torpedo Especial

The complex blend consists of a filler from Nicaragua’s Jalapa Valley and Esteli, an Indonesian binder, and a Jalapa Habano wrapper.

The cigar is a very nice looking reddish brown. It has a nice weight int he hand. It feels dense. Here is a shot of the foot.

The test draw was a bit firm after cutting the cap. It appeared to be workable. The initial flavors at light up were a combination of cedar and sweet grapefruit, leather, coffee, and black pepper which I rate at a 7 1/2. The finish was a leather heavy cream with some lingering black pepper.

About 1 1/2 inches in the front end flavors have changed to a lightly sweet grapefruit with a little nutmeg mixed in. There is quite a bit of leather notes and earthiness. The coffee notes are noticed at the end. The finish is a cream with dry toast. The cigar is medium bodied. This cigar has much more leather notes than I thought it would. The ash is tight and is very light in color with some pepper notes mixed in.

At the band, just past the midpoint, the flavors are still a semi-sweet grapefruit with nutmeg and they are faint when compared to the leather notes. There is a little butter notes in the leather. There is also some dry wood notes with some charred flavors. The finish is still a dry toast with some cream notes and lingering pepper. The cigar is just about medium to full bodied now.

The cigar took 1 hour 10 minutes to smoke. The front end flavors got back to a cedar with a little sweetness, heavy on the leather, heavy on the charred oak also. The coffee is a nice base. The pepper actually improved to a 7 1/2 to 8. The cigar is medium to full. The finish is unchanged. This cigar is very much about the leather and coffee notes. The sweet flavors cannot compete with the heavy leather and coffee notes. This cigar could be better, in my opinion if it had more sweetness and some richness to go along with the heavy leather.

Score: 87
