Warped Cigars Futuro Selección 109 (6 x 52)

Video review HERE.

(Description taken from Cigar-Coop.com website)
Last year Warped Cigars and Casa Fernandez announced a joint collaboration called Futuro. The project was a joint venture between two rising stars in the cigar industry, Kyle Gellis of Warped Cigars and Max Fernandez of Casa Fernandez. Warped Cigars has been collaborating with Casa Fernandez’s Tabacos Valle de Jalapa S.A (TABSA) factory to produce several of its lines. As a part of this concept, both Gellis and Fernandez jointly developed a blend and then each produced a size to his own personal preference. Today we take a closer look at Fernandez’s vitola, the Futuro Selección 109 – featuring the 109 flat “bullet” cap in a belicoso format.

Today I am reviewing Fernandez's vitola, the Seleccion 109.

Blend Profile:
The cigar is a mix of Corojo ’99 and Criollo ’98 tobaccos – two staple tobaccos from Casa Fernandez’s Aganorsa farms. The tobaccos come from a section at TABSA called the “vault” – which is a section of tobacco the Fernandez family keeps under lock and key and is home to some of its most prized tobacco.

Wrapper: Nicaraguan Corojo ‘99
Binder: Nicaraguan Criollo ‘98
Filler: Nicaraguan Criollo ’98 and Corojo ‘99
Country of Origin: Nicaragua (Tabacos Valle de Jalapa S.A – TABSA)

Vitolas Available:
There are currently two vitolas in the Futuro line. While Fernandez’s Selección 109 is a belicoso, Gellis opted to produce a Corona Gorda size known as Selección Suprema. Both vitolas are available in twenty count boxes with slide top lids. Production has been limited to 400 cigars per size.size.

Selección Suprema: 5 5/8 x 46 (Gellis’ size)
Selección 109: 6 x 52 (Fernandez’s size) REVIEWED TODAY

One footnote, Gellis is not known to produce vitolas over a 50 ring gauge,  The Selección 109 is the largest ring gauge in offerings by Gellis.

The cigar has a unique cap and is dense feeling in the hand.

The test draw after cutting the bullet cap was very good. The initial flavors were orange citrus with cherry notes, leather, earthy coffee, and white pepper rated at a 7 1/2. Interesting initial flavors.

About one inch in the cigar settled down. I lost the citrus and cherry notes. Now it's a subdued cedar flavor with cream and dry wood. The leather and earthy coffee are very prominent. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is a combination of cream and leather with a little lingering white pepper.

2 inches in the burn is very even but the ash is bent, or warped. The sweeter notes of cedar and cream are coming out much better now. The cigar is burning very slowly and that's always a good thing. The slower I smoke the cigar the better the sweeter notes come out. In fact, the cedar and cream are about even in intensity with the leather and earthy coffee. The cigar is very close to full bodied now.

There were no major changes from the 2 inch point to the end. The somewhat sweet cedar is almost overwhelmed by the leather and earthy coffee. The pepper increased from the midpoint onward. The cigar is a low grade full bodied. The midpoint of the cigar had the most sweetness and it tended to decrease to the end leaving the leather and earthy coffee as the lead flavors. This was my first review of a Warped Cigars product. I enjoyed the cigar. This is what I'd call a slightly sweet dark noted cigar.

Jason Holly of Viva Republica to unveil "Ivy"‏

April 27, 2016 - Jason Holly will unveil the release of “Ivy” at an exclusive event at Casa de Montecristo in Countryside, IL on Thursday, April 28th. “Ivy” is a project that although under parent company Viva Republica will boast a completely different personality - initially Ivy will only be sold in 100 specially selected retail shops.

The first batch of “Ivy” is an Ecuadorian Habano Corojo wrapped expression of a complex but balanced set of earthy and fruity flavors partly derived from its double binder of tobaccos from Cameroon and the Dominican Republic. Inside the alluring wrapped is a blend of high primed filler leaves from the Dominican Republic’s Cibao Valley and Nicaragua’s Estelí and Condega regions.

The Ivy concept was born out of sort of transfixing the style and mannerisms of the Ivy League. Jason Holly said, “I used to smoke cigars in Harvard Yard when I was in school. In a store on the square I saw an old picture of JFK smoking a cigar in the Yard, the history and tradition is overwhelming and I wanted to create a brand that had that feel of nostalgia.”

While the cigar is full production it is only being offered to an initial 100 accounts. “There’s a very specific growth plan that we have conceived to properly introduce Ivy to the marketplace,” said Jason Holly, owner of Viva Republica, parent company of Ivy.

The first offerings include a trio of sizes: Lamont (Corona - 5.25 x 43) $12 MSRP, Dudley (Robusto - 5” x 50) $13.25 MSRP and Porcellian (Double Corona - 7.5” x 50) $14.50 MSRP. “We have some other sizes already produced and aging,” Holly said, “They will start shipping by the end of July.” All tobaccos used in the Ivy Habano blend have been aged a minimum of five years. The first batch uses filler tobacco from 2007 and 2009 and wrapper leaf grown in 2008.

This release and endeavor undoubtedly askews the previous Viva Republica releases but doesn’t necessarily signal a change for the company. “Ivy is a just another side of what we do and was designed to help connect with cognoscente consumers whose buying patterns tend to diverge from the core Viva offerings which are more value positioned.”

It’s not the same style cigar as you may expect from Viva Republica, focused on well-aged and nuanced tobacco rather than the typical power-forward blends Viva Republica has produced such as Advanced and Guerrilla Warfare.

Ivy ships in ten count boxes designed by noted illustrator Glenn Wolk, who has done product design for the likes of The Beatles, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger.

Holly said there will be future blends and releases in the Ivy line but would not reveal how or when new accounts would be added.

As typical with other Viva República products, Ivy is produced at La Aurora, S.A. in partnership with Don Guillermo León and exclusively distributed in the United States by Miami Cigar & Co.

EXCELLENCE DEFINED.

Black Works Studio Killer Bee (4 1/2 x 46)

Video review HERE.

James Brown, creator of Black Label Trading Company (BLTC) and partner at Fabrica Oveja Negra, is launching Black Works Studio as a showcase for the boutique cigar factory in Esteli, Nicaragua.

"Part of the motivation for opening our own factory, Fabrica Oveja Negra, was to experiment and develop unique blends highlighting Nicaraguan tobacco. Black Works Studio (BLK WKS) is my first opportunity to use our factory as my playground. Blending cigars is my passion and I ended up with several blends and ideas on the shelf, the time was right to launch a new brand. My inspiration comes from many things; art, movies, music, etc. that ultimately result in a new cigar blend. I have always looked at cigar making as an art form and BWS is another expression of what I can do as a cigar maker and brand owner."

"Keeping with our small batch philosophy BLK WKS showcases Fabrica Oveja Negra's ability to not only create unique premium cigars but also bring new brands into the market," continues Brown.

Three cigars were released:

NBK, 6 x 46 box press corona larga
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Habano Oscuro
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan

Killer Bee, 4.5 x 46 petite corona (REVIEWED TODAY)
Wrapper: Ecuadorian maduro
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan

Rorschach, 5 x 38 petite panatela
Wrapper: Ecuadorian habano
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan

This is a well made, good looking dark cigar. It features the signature linear cap. It reminds me of a bumble bee.

The foot features the closed foot just like the NBK.

The test draw after cutting the cap was effortless. The initial flavors were espresso, black licorice, cream, dry wood, and massive amounts of black pepper rated at a 9.

About one inch in the cigar made a change. You no longer have the black licorice and cream but you do have sweet chocolate notes. The espresso and black pepper remain massive. The finish is one of dry wood and sweet cream with a ton of lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium to full bodied and there is little doubt it will move up.

2 inches in there are still massive amounts of espresso, sweet chocolate, dry cedar, and massive amounts of black pepper. The cigar is full bodied now. The finish is unchanged. The NBK had a lot of black pepper but this cigar has even more!

The cigar lasted about 43 minutes and the flavors did not change from the last segment. This is a very dark noted cigar with lots of black pepper. It is full bodied. I enjoyed the sweet chocolate notes. This is a good, solid, powerful cigar and another great addition to the Black Works Studio portfolio. Very good cigar.

The cigar is very well made and had a dark chocolate wrapper. It has a nice oily shine. The cigar features a closed foot.

The test draw after cutting the cap was very good. The initial flavors were a sweet orange citrus and lots of espresso. You get these flavors immediately; no waiting around. I like that in a cigar.

A half inch in the flavors are expanding into molasses and brown sugar to go along with the citrus and espresso. The black pepper is rated at an 8. The finish is a dry wood with cream and a lot of lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium bodied but I expect it to move up.

At the midpoint the flavors are sweet orange citrus, brown sugar, touch of molasses, and espresso. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is the same flavors but the sweet cream is the lead flavor. There is still good black pepper on both ends. The cigar has settled down into a very good cigar.

4 inches in the molasses notes have gone away. In it's place there are now dry cedar notes. The finish is unchanged, as is the black pepper. The molasses notes gave it a thick sweetness and they are now gone.

The cigar ended with the same primary notes but in the place of the citrus is now sweet cedar. The cigar is now full bodied. The finish is unchanged. Being critical, if the cigar had maintained the sweet, thick molasses with the citrus notes, brown sugar, and espresso I was prepared to rate this cigar a 94. I loved those flavors. However, cigars can change. But, this was a very good cigar and I was impressed. I have no doubt that these will be a hit for Black Works Studio.

Herrera Esteli TAA Exclusive (6 x 52)

Video review HERE.

(Description taken from Cigar-Coop.com website)
This year, Drew Estate will provide a cigar exclusive to the Tobacconists Association of America retailers as a part of its TAA Exclusive Series.  The cigar is a part of the Herrera Esteli brand and is appropriately titled the Herrera Esteli TAA Exclusive. Plans are for the Herrera Esteli TAA Exclusive to make its debut at the 48th annual TAA Meeting and Convention being held in Puerta Vallarta Mexico beginning on March 6th. The cigar itself is planned to ship this April to TAA retailers.

The Herrera Esteli TAA Exclusive was blended by Drew Estate Master Blender Willy Herrera. The blend features a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. This is the first time Herrera has worked with a this wrapper at Drew Estate. The remainder of the blend features a Brazilian Mata Fina binder and an all-Nicaraguan filler.

The cigar will be available in one size – a 6 x 52 Toro priced at $12.00 per cigar. It will be packaged in twelve count boxes priced at $144.00 per box.

In a press release announcing the cigar Herrera commented, “This is my first blend since joining Drew Estate that utilizes Connecticut Broadleaf tobacco. Drew Estate fans know that we’re famous for our use of Connecticut Broadleaf tobaccos, especially in our Liga Privada No. 9 and Nica Rustica lines. I’ve been experimenting with blends that incorporate this incredible wrapper since coming on board and finally have a blend I’m really excited about. I think anyone who’s a fan of my blends will definitely appreciate this cigar. Spicy, meaty, and rich – get ready!”

This is not the first cigar Drew Estate has provided to the TAA.  It has an on-going release under its Acid brand called the Acid Bing Bang TAA Exclusive.

Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf
Binder; Brazilian Mata Fina
Filler: Nicaraguan (Esteli, Jalapa, Condega)
Country of Origin: Nicaragua (La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate)

Vitolas Available:
As mentioned, the Herrera Esteli TAA Exclusive will be available in a single size a – 6 x 52 Toro.

The cigar is very well made and has a slightly oily wrapper. It also has a nice feel in the hand.

The test draw after cutting the cap was very good. The initial flavors at light up were a sweet orange citrus with a touch of boysenberry, cinnamon, dark chocolate, coffee, and black pepper rated at an 8. The as is starting off almost totally white.

About one inch in I lost the boysenberry notes but there is now white chocolate attached to the sweet citrus and cinnamon. The pepper notes are still good. The darker notes of dark chocolate and coffee remain a good base for the cigar. The finish is one of a cream with white chocolate characteristics with some lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium bodied and it seems tilted up toward medium to full bodied.

2 inches in the citrus and cinnamon continue to increase in sweetness. The lower level flavors are secondary and not overpowering. The cigar is still medium bodied but I still think it will move upward. There is a nice mix of sweet notes to dark notes.

At the midpoint I noticed some brown sugar on the front end. It goes nicely with the citrus, cinnamon, white chocolate, dark chocolate, and coffee. The finish and strength are unchanged. The flavors are working very good together.

At the end the flavors continued. The dark notes seem to be more noticeable at the end but they never overpowered the sweeter notes. The cigar did finally reach medium to full bodied. The flavors in this cigar are very, very nice. I would put this on your must-try list. I found this to be an excellent cigar from Drew Estate. Willy Herrera did a great job blending this cigar.

Espinosa Especial No. 4 (5 x 52)

Video review HERE.

(Description taken from Cigar-Coop.com website)
The Espinosa Especial is a new line launched by Espinosa Cigars in 2015. The line made its debut at the 2015 IPCPR Trade Show. For this particular line, the company turns to a wrapper that it is very familiar with -Mexican San Andres.

Blend Profile:

In addition to the Mexican Capa Negra wrapper, the binder and fillers are comprised of Nicaraguan tobaccos from the four main growing regions of Nicaragua (Esteli, Jalapa, Condega, and Ometepe).

Wrapper: Mexican Capa Negra
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Country of Origin: Nicaragua (Tabacalera La Zona SA)

Vitolas Available:

The Espinosa Especial is currently available in three sizes.  The cigars are packaged in ten count boxes.

No. 1: 6 1/2 x 48
No. 4: 5 x 52
No. 5: 6 x 54

The foot of the cigar:

The test draw after cutting the cap was very good. The initial flavors were black coffee, earth, sweet cedar, white chocolate, and black pepper rated at a 7 1/2 to 8. The white chocolate and coffee notes are the predominant notes with the cedar being secondary.

One inch in the flavors are about like they started but there is now a touch of butter and some brown sugar on the white chocolate. The cedar notes are faint with the coffee notes heavy. There is a touch of earthiness; not much, and the pepper is definitely an 8. The finish is a toasted cream with a generous amount of lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium to full bodied.

At the midpoint the only thing different is the white chocolate notes are sweeter. There is still a touch of butter and brown sugar. The cedar notes are still faint. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is unchanged but it is also sweeter. The lingering pepper on the finish has improved.

As the cigar ended the cedar notes came out the best they have been. It is a dry cedar and very sweet. The white chocolate notes are now secondary. The butter is faint and there is a touch of the brown sugar. The coffee notes are still very good. The pepper remained very good and maintained an 8 rating. The pepper on the finish continued to increase. The cigar ended at medium to full bodied. This was a very good cigar with interesting flavors. I liked the white chocolate notes a lot and when it changed to a sweet, dry cedar I also enjoyed those. Espinosa Cigars has really stepped up their game. Very good cigar.
