Weekend review; November 22nd, 2008

It was a cold weekend to be in the yard but there was another batch of leaves that had to be removed. Looks like this will be the last big one. After the yard work I settled down for a couple new cigars.
Cigars reviewed this weekend:
  • Primos Habano Criollo Maduro Toro
  • Cubao Torpedo

Primos Habano Criollo Maduro Toro (6x52)

This cigar is made by Los Blaocos. They are very inexpensive. I picked this one up at a local shop (Lite Um Up Cigars). I believe it was around $3.50 or so. I found them online for around $63 for a bundle of 25. It is a very dark cigar; almost black. It's a Nicaraguan cigar which also uses Honduran and Peruvian tobacco. It had good good maduro sweetness, similar to a Perdomo maduro but not quite as sweet. There was some pepper and earthiness. Pretty good spice, too. There is a nice balance of sweetness, pepper and spice. A very enjoyable cigar. The burn was very good. The ash is nice and tight. The finish is long. Stayed pretty consistent with just a slight bitterness at the 2/3 point but it settled back into a good cigar.

Cubao Torpedo (6.1x52)

Eddie Ortega sent me a sampler of this cigar to try. When they arrived I was excited because I have wanted to try them for a long time. I'm always game to try another Don Pepin Garcia made cigar. It is a very nice looking cigar. It is a natural brown color. Immediately upon lighting the cigar I tasted leather. There was an ample amount of spice and lots of pepper! It also has the Pepin-esque "twang" to it. It's a fruity taste, somewhat like tangerine. I've tasted this in other Pepin cigars. I'm not sure if that's the best description but it's all I can come up with. I really like it, whatever it is. The finish is long and pleasing! The cigar stayed perfectly consistent. The burn was lazer perfect! I absolutely loved it. I will buy these cigars!!!!

Mid-week Review EXTRA (local shop house blend)

I took a trip to "Lite um up cigars" yesterday afternoon to see how Tom and the business was doing. Tom said he's on pace to have the best month ever! That's great news. He has a very nice shop and a great bar to enjoy your favorite beverage. Tom carries some cigars that the other local shops do not carry, so I helped myself to the humidor. While in there, he told me of a "secret cigar" that he wanted me to try and report back on. I, of course, said "sure". He handed me a very dark cigar, toro size, that looked very nice! It was a double maduro Nicaraguan puro that Tom had blended! He took a trip to the factory and spent several days trying different blends until he came up with what he liked. This was an example of the final product. Here is my report:

Double maduro Nicaraguan puro toro (6x50)

Lite um up cigars house blend

Very dark cigar. This cigar had no band but Tom tells me he has designed a band for the cigar. Those will come later.
After cutting, the test draw was very good. I lit the cigar and smoked it for an inch or so. At this point the cigar had great spice, coffee, licorice, maduro sweetness, and pepper. The pepper was very noticeable when blowing it through my nose. The finish is fairly short at this point but the pepper lingers on your pallet. It is full bodied with a very even burn. The ash is tight. At halfway point the licorice and coffee notes are still strong. The spice is secondary but it really adds to the finish. The cigar is spot on consistent. In the latter stages the finish lengthens leaving a pleasing taste. This is a very good, full bodied maduro cigar.
Tom appears to have hit on a winner with this blend. He'll have no trouble selling this cigar. I'm not at liberty to discuss any other details of the cigar so you'll have to visit the shop and when he's ready to tell more, he will.

Score: 91
I encourage you to visit his shop in Northeast Columbia. Visit his website to see the shop and get more info: http://liteumupcigars.com/default.aspx

Weekend review; November 15th and 16th, 2008

Cool, rainy Saturday, and plenty of wind! Too windy to work in the yard, so I went to the Maduro Room! (I was going to bag leaves but that would have been a huge waist of time!)

Jack Porter (Outfield Jack) met me there. We had a nice afternoon with other cigar lovers. I had the new DPG El Rey del Habanos, a red labeled Pepin cigar that they advertise as mild. It's far from mild, has great flavor, and has the typical Pepin-esque taste. I love them!

I got back home before the South Carolina/Florida football game, but as it turned out I may as well not even turned the TV on! Wow! Florida put an ol' fashioned butt-whoopin' on SC!

At least I had a good cigar to smoke while watching the beat-down; a Don Lino Africa Victoria Falls. On that note, here's the reviews:

Reviewed cigars:
  • Don Lino Africa Victoria Falls
  • Griffin Toro

Don Lino Africa Victoria Falls (salomon) 7.2x54

A rather rough looking cigar with numerous bumps, but I love this shape! I make a minimum cut on the cap and then light the "nipple"! First draws are a combination of leather and spice. Pepper is noted on the pallet and especially in the aftertaste. The finish is long. Very nice cigar and it lasts a long time!

The Griffins Toro (6.2x52)

This looks like a torpedo, but I belive they consider it a toro. Whatever, it was a Connecticut shade cigar with nice spice and quite a bit of black pepper on the pallet! That was a nice find since most Connecticut shade cigars are so mild you don't really know when you start smoking them! This was a mild cigar which transitioned into a medium bodied one. The finish is long and somewhat sweet. There are minor hints of caramel. Nice cigar, just a little mild.

Weekend review; November 8th and 9th, 2008

Well, the presidential elections are over...THANK GOODNESS! The talk about the next president started 2 years ago and I think we were all sick of it! And, the democrats won out this time. Barak Obama is our next president. He didn't get my vote, or my wife's, but he obviously got enough to win the election. He says he's all about "change". To be honest, I'm scared of what he means by "change". But, we'll see.

Anyway, this was an unusual weekend for reviews because so many cigars disappointed me. I mean REALLY disappointed me! As you know, the reviews posted here are my opinion which may, or may not agree with yours. Try these cigars and see what you think. I can guarantee that all the reviews here are worth every penny you paid for them.

This weekend's cigars are:

  • Rocky Patel Old World Reserve maduro toro
  • Don Pepin Garcia Cuban Classic robusto
  • Pontillo maduro toro
  • Don Pepin Garcia Series JJ maduro belicoso
Saturday, November 8th, 2008

Rocky Patel Old World Reserve maduro toro (6.5x52)

Slightly square pressed; not a sharp press. Very spicy with hints of pepper but there is little maduro flavor or sweetness. There is a slight hint of caramel-like taste. The finish is short. The cigar could be better if it had more flavor. It has plenty of spice but lacks anything else. To be honest, I expected much more from this cigar.

Score: 85

Don Pepin Garcia Cuban Classic robusto (5x50)

Reddish/brown color, Good spice with hints of pepper. Light leather undertones. Finish is fairly long and somewhat leathery and nutty. The ash is tight. Not a bad cigar but not my favorite DPG.

Score: 87

Pontillo maduro toro (5.75x54)

This cigar is from the original Pontillo's which were made in Nicaragua. He has since moved his factory to the Dominican Republic and uses different tobacco to make his cigars. These maduro's are some of the best maduro's I've ever had. I am really going to miss them. You can still find them on line but when they're gone, they're gone! The cigar has very nice construction. I decided to "punch" this cigar rather than straight cut it.

Upon lighting, you immediately get a blast of spice, pepper, and sweet maduro flavor. The draw is firm but not difficult. The finish is long. This is a very slow burning cigar. You can smoke it for 1 3/4 hours easily! The ash is tight. The cigar stays very consistent. A very good cigar.

Don Pepin Garcia Series JJ maduro belicoso (5.7x52)

This is a new DPG cigar for me. I reviewed the natural version of this cigar a week or so ago. It was pretty good. I'd buy them again. The construction of this cigar is typically excellent. All DPG cigars have quality construction. Right from the start this cigar had a ton of black pepper! I mean a ton! Actually, after smoking 1/2 of it that's about all it had. There was very little spice or any other flavor. There was no maduro flavor; no maduro sweetness. I can't believe I'm writing a bad review about a DPG cigar, but I am. This cigar just did not do it for me. I will not buy these again.

Weekend review; November 1st and 2nd, 2008

Well, Halloween's over and everyone's already thinking Christmas! What happened to Thanksgiving? It's just a speed bump on the road to Christmas anymore!
The presidential elections are tomorrow, so get out and vote. I'm hoping McCain can pull off the upset because I don't want four years of Obamination! I can't take any more taxes! Besides, Palin is pretty hot! : )
Anyway, on to the weekend reviews.
The cigars reviewed are:
  • Lito Gomez Small Batch No. 2
  • La Aurora Maduro robusto
  • Legend's Series (Red) by Perdomo, torpedo

Lito Gomez Small Batch No. 2 (6.5x54)

This was a birthday gift from my son. It's been sitting in the humidor since the beginning of August of this year. Today I decided to have it. It is a beautiful looking cigar; very dark. The test draw was good. After lighting, there is a ton of spice and pepper! You can taste the ligero immediately! This is a very dense cigar; thick. The finish is long and somewhat sweet. Very full bodied. At the midpoint the spice is still great. The pepper has slightly decreased. Otherwise, it stayed consistent. Nice cigar but very expensive! (around $16 each!)

Score: 92

La Aurora Maduro robusto (5x50)

This is not a dark maduro cigar. After lighting, there is a maduro sweetness and some of the cameroon flavor that is typical with La Aurura. Not a super sweet maduro, however. There is decent spice. Hints of pepper. A little inconsistent. The maduro flavor comes and goes. Not a bad cigar and pretty inexpensive.

Score: 87

Legend's Series (Red) by Perdomo (torpedo) (5.7x54)

Nicely constructed cigar. Very dark. Perdomo makes a pretty good maduro cigar. This maduro is somewhat sweet and has good spice. Medium bodied. It is a good, inexpensive, everyday maduro cigar. I try to keep these on hand at all times! The burn is even. A pretty decent maduro cigar!

Score: 88
