Sept. 2, Lure released The Redfish, a new 6 x 52 toro made entirely of Nicaraguan tobaccos: a corojo oscuro wrapper over a binder from Ometepe and fillers from EstelĂ, Jalapa and Ometepe. Interestingly, a press release says that the filler tobaccos are the same as The Lumineer, a new release from Valacari that began shipping in July. Production is handled by La Tabacaria Cigars in EstelĂ.
Each cigar has an MSRP of $15 and production is limited to 250 bundles of 10 cigars.
“When I approached Nimmer (Ahmad, founder of Valacari) with the idea of making a cigar to honor my late father, he gladly offered his help and was patient and supportive as the brand gained traction over the next year,” said Lou Cross III, founder of Lure, in a press release. “Nearing the second year of offering cigars under the Lure Cigars brand, we have leaned more on each other’s core competencies and focused on our strengths. We felt it was the perfect time to combine some of the best offerings from both companies and create a cigar that showcased the signatures of both brands. The name The Redfish is a nod to the color of the wrapper leaf and a popular sportfish to catch.”
The cigar is medium brown and has a nice feel in the hand.
The test draw after cutting the cap was a little firm. So I used my PerfecDraw Tool to open the draw. The initial flavors at light up were a candy-like orange citrus, similar to a baby aspirin, brown sugar, tanned leather, and earthiness. There was black pepper rated at 7 1/2. Pretty good start.
At the first third (25 minutes) the notes were pretty much the same but I also now have black coffee. The sweet notes have ramped up and they're working well together. The cigar is medium bodied. The finish is dry leather with a touch of brown sugar and very good lingering black pepper. I rated the first third 94.
As I moved through the second third (52 minutes) the burn was a little off. The draw is better now. In the second third I had less candy-like citrus notes and more brown sugar. The tanned leather and brown sugar are combining a long with the earthiness and black pepper to make a nice flavor. Not much, if any, black coffee. The cigar is medium bodied. The finish is dry leather with very good lingering black pepper. The cigar got a little better for me. I rated the second third 95.
The cigar lasted 1 hour 17 minutes. The burn improved a little but it's still a little off. The candy-like orange citrus is back to a nice level along with brown sugar, tanned leather, and black coffee and a little earthiness. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is standard leather with a little brown sugar and very good lingering black pepper. The combination of the notes is still very good. It's a little different from the second third because there is black coffee in the mix but it's still quite good. I held the score of 95. This is a very good offering from Lure Cigars.
