Altadis U.S.A. has announced that the Espada by Montecristo Signature will begin shipping next month. It’s a Nicaraguan puro that uses a Colorado claro wrapper from Jalapa over filler tobaccos from Estelí. The Espada by Montecristo Signature is debuting in a single size, a 6 x 55 vitola the company calls valiente.
It has an MSRP of $15 per cigar and is offered in boxes of 10 cigars. Altadis U.S.A. says the cigar is a limited edition though production numbers have not been disclosed. The cigar is made in the Plasencia factory.
The cigar is a large vitola for Montecristo and has a very good feel in the hand.
The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were heavy on worn leather. The notes were unripened apricot, light brown sugar, quite a bit of a worn leather, and black coffee. There was black pepper rated at 7 1/2. There is more leather than black coffee for your base flavors. A very dark noted start.
At the first third (27 minutes) the ash was still intact. The flavors are just like they started but the apricot is a little more developed. I still had brown sugar and now there is a little nutmeg following it. There is still a lot of worn leather and joining it is the black coffee. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is light apricot and leather with good lingering black pepper. I rated the first third 90.
As I moved through the second third (59 minutes) there was a little improvement in the apricot and brown sugar notes. They came out a little but not much. The leather is still quite heavy and there is still quite a bit of black coffee. The cigar is still medium to full bodied. The finish is unchanged. With the increase in sweetness I raised the second third score to 91.
The cigar lasted 1 hour 22 minutes. In the final third the black coffee really jumped. It overtook the worn leather notes. There are only hints of apricot. The cigar is quite full bodied. The finish is unchanged. In this segment the cigar went almost totally dark. Quite a change from the second third. I rated the final third 86. This is not a bad cigar but it's very leathery and dark noted.
