La Madrina is one of several brands offered by Dapper Cigar Company. Dapper Cigar Company is a brand founded by a cigar enthusiast named Ian Reith. Based out of Fresno, California, Reith’s background is in the Information Technology (IT) space. After falling in love with cigars, Reith set out to learn as much as he could about the industry – and eventually started working on producing his own cigars. He started out with a line called Cubo made at Tabacalera Carreras in EstelĂ, Nicaragua. Since then, he has added additional lines out of Nicaragua America Cigars SA (NACSA) and has plans to introduce some lines out the La Aurora factory in the Dominican Republic. La Madrina is one of the lines coming out of the NACSA factory and today we take a closer look at the La Madrina Natural blend in the Robusto size.
The theme of La Madrina is the Mexican Day of the Dead celebrations. La Madrina translates to “godmother” and it was a name given to a woman named Yolanda Garfias Woo. Based in San Francisco, Garfias Woo is credited with educating many people in the California about the Day of the Dead celebrations. While Reith wanted to do a Day of the Dead themed cigar, there were a couple of other releases that came out with this theme – most notably Crowned Heads’ Las Calaveras line and Black Label Trading Company’s Santa Muerte line. Reith wanted to make sure his release had its own unique spin, so he worked with his artist in coming up with the brand’s design which features a skeleton hand holding a rose. The idea here was to create an imagery theme that highlighted both life and death.
The La Madrina Natural is a five country multi-national blend highlighted by an Ecuadorian Sungrown Habano wrapper. The cigar is produced at the NACSA factory under production manager Raul Disla. Disla and NACSA also handle production for Steve Saka’s Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust Mi Querida line.

The cigar is a medium brown. The cigar has a dense feel in the hand.
2 inches in (34 minutes) the cream notes have changed into a sweet white chocolate. You still have the nice strawberry notes with brown sugar and the large amount of earthy black coffee. The black pepper has toned down somewhat to a 6 1/2 or 7. The finish is a nutmeg and cream combination with a modest amount of lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium bodied. The first third was rather impressive. I rate the first third a 90.
The second third ended at 1 hour 8 minutes. Now there is the additional note of nutmeg and it is detracting from the sweeter notes. The white chocolate is very faint. The strawberry and brown sugar is still there but it's blanketed by the nutmeg. The earthy black coffee is still good. The finish is unchanged. I did not like the sweeter flavors decreasing due to the heavy nutmeg notes. I rated the second third an 88.
The cigar lasted 1 hour 37 minutes. Quite a burn time for a robusto! In the final third the nutmeg toned down and some of the sweetness came back. The cigar got much better with the lower nutmeg. The cigar reached medium to full bodied. The finish was unchanged. This was a good cigar with the sweet notes and heavy dark notes. It seems to symbolize life and death as the band represents. These may be hard to find but give them a try. I rated the final third an 89.
