Viaje Frank Castle (6 1/4 x 54)

Video review HERE.

(Description taken from Halfwheel.com website)

There’s a pair of new Viaje Skull and Bones has shipped, both inspired by Marvel Comic’s Punisher character.

The two cigars—Viaje Skull and Bones Frank Castle, and Skull and Bones The Punisher—are both 6 1/4 x 54 vitolas that use what the company says is “a proprietary blend of Nicaraguan tobaccos.” The Punisher appears to use a lighter wrapper, while Frank Castle uses a darker wrapper. A spokesperson said the cigars are made in Nicaragua but did not name a factory.

Each cigar has an MSRP of $13 and will ship in bundles of 25. The spokesperson did not answer a question about how many are being released.

In the Marvel universe, Frank Castle is a marine veteran who watches his family get killed. After that, he decides to fight crime using violence, earning him the Punisher moniker. The character was created in the 1970s and has been featured in a variety of comics, movies and television shows, most recently as the title character in the now-canceled Netflix series that aired in 2017-2018.

The cigar has what appears to be a plain white band but in the right light you can make out the skull and bones symbol, although it's quite faint. (See band picture at end of this post) The cigar has a nice, dense feel in the hand.

The test draw after cutting the cap was very good. The initial flavors at light up were cedar with a little citrus influence, light brown sugar, citrus peel, a lot of a very dry nutmeg, and a black coffee base. There was black pepper rated at 7 1/2. The start is pretty good.

At the first third (39 minutes) you really notice the large amount of dry nutmeg in this cigar. There is some sweetness from the cedar/citrus combination and brown sugar. The nutmeg is the higher percentage of flavors but there are plenty of sweeter notes at this point. Some of the brown sugar seems to mix with the dry nutmeg to make a sort of paste. The finish is dry nutmeg with average lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium bodied. I rated the first third 91.

As I moved through the second third (1 hour 16 minutes) the cigar is burning very evenly. The cigar has turned very earthy with tons of dry nutmeg, leather notes, and black coffee. The sweeter notes are very diminished. The cigar is now medium to full bodied. The finish is straight dry nutmeg with improved lingering black pepper. The cigar made a severe turn to the earthy side. I rated the second third 86.

The cigar lasted 1 hour 48 minutes. During the final third we had a power outage during a thunder storm. I finished the cigar in the dark with only light from the window. The cigar stayed very earthy and the enjoyment decreased. Nothing much changed with the flavors. If anything they decreased a little more. The cigar started out nice but went downhill fast. I've seen this with other Viaje cigars lately. The finish is unchanged. The cigar ended medium to full bodied. I rated the final third 84.

Overall Score: 87
