When the Trinidad Espiritu debuted in 2019, Altadis U.S.A.—which sells the non-Cuban Trinidad brand in the U.S., said there would be three different blends as part of the series. That third blend is now shipping to stores.
The Trinidad Espiritu No. 3 uses a Mexican wrapper over a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan fillers. Like the Espiritu No. 1 and No. 2, the No. 3 is made at Tabacalera AJ Fernandez Cigars de Nicaragua S.A. in Estelí, Nicaragua, with Abdel Fernández and Rafael Nodal, vp of Tabacalera USA, credited for creating the blend, which, according to the company, is described as medium-to-full-bodied in strength.
The new line is available in five regular production sizes:
Trinidad Espiritu No. 3 Robusto (5 x 50) — $11.13 (Box of 20, $222.60)
Trinidad Espiritu No. 3 Toro (6 x 54) — $12.08 (Box of 20, $241.60) REVIEWED TODAY
Trinidad Espiritu No. 3 Magnum (6 x 60) — $12.68 (Box of 20, $253.60)
Trinidad Espiritu No. 3 Panetela (7 1/2 x 40) — $12.50 (Box of 20, $250)
Trinidad Espiritu No. 3 Belicoso (6 1/8 x 52) — $12.61 (Box of 20, $252.20)
“The Trinidad Espiritu Series No. 3 is a sensory experience like no other,” said Nodal in a press release. “With a blend of the finest tobaccos – including the Habano San Andres wrapper – and carefully selected regions, these soft-pressed cigars boast a complex yet subtle profile with earthy notes, light coffee, anise, and the right amount of spice in the finish.”
For comparison here are the other releases that I reviewed:
Trinidad Espiritu Toro Series No. 1 (6 x 52)
Oct. 26, 2019
Score: 91.33
Trinidad Espiritu Series No.2 Toro (6 x 54)
March 13, 2021
Score: 92.33
The cigar is dark and well made. It has a nice feel in the hand.
The test draw after cutting the cap was good. the initial flavors at light up were a citrus/pear combination, brown sugar, cinnamon, and a lot of black coffee which could be described as espresso. There was black pepper rated at 7 1/2. There was nice sweetness and a lot of darkness. Pretty good start.
At the first third (30 minutes) the flavors are nice but there's a lot of black coffee which takes away some of the sweetness. The same notes are still in play. The cigar is medium to full bodied and leaning toward full bodied already. The finish is pear with good lingering black pepper. I rated the first third 93.
Moving through the second third (1 hour) the sweet notes came out more. There's still plenty of black coffee and now there's also dark chocolate. The cigar is now full bodied. The finish is sweet pear with some dark chocolate and very good lingering black pepper. The cigar improved and got to where I hoped it would be. I rated the second third 94.
The cigar lasted 1 hour 30 minutes. The elevated sweetness in the second third did not hold. The cigar got back to very much the way it was in the first third. There's still some dark chocolate, which helped the cigar, but the level of sweetness dropped. The cigar is full bodied. The finish is unchanged. I rated the final third 93. This is a good cigar but I wish the sweetness was at the level of the second third throughout. Of the 3 offerings I think this is the best.
