MACANUDO RELEASES LIMITED EDITION EMISSARY ESPAÑA TORPEDO

Following a series of notable 90+ ratings, Macanudo unveils an exciting new addition to the Emissary España line: a box-pressed torpedo (6 X 52) vitola.  This limited-edition release showcases the same sophisticated blend as the full-time cigar.

Macanudo Emissary España features a handful of incredibly rare tobaccos grown between 5 and 10 years. The highlight of the blend is a Havana seed tobacco grown in Riolobos, Spain. This is the first expansion of the Emissary lineup to date.

Macanudo Emissary España has an impressive makeup in both name and aging time. The five-country blend starts with a U.S. Connecticut Broadleaf Claro wrapper, aged 5 years, and then follows with a Nicaraguan Condega binder, aged 6 years. The blend consists of Dominican Piloto (aged 5 years), Colombian (aged 5 years), Nicaraguan ASP (aged 6 years), and Spanish tobacco (aged 10 years).

Steve Abbot, director of marketing, said, "For the Emissary lineup, we really wanted to pull out all of the stops and craft a cigar that epitomizes European sophistication. We are really happy with the result, and based on the popularity of the cigar, we wanted to come out with another great offering. We landed on a box-pressed torpedo, which brings out the best blend for a smooth smoking experience that highlights the rare tobaccos within.”

Emissary España is available full-time in Robusto (5 X 54), Toro (6 X 52), Perfecto (6 X 54) and Churchill (7 X48) Vitolas. Only 1,500 boxes of the box-pressed torpedo vitola will be available. The cigars ship to stores October 1. SRP for the box-pressed torpedo is $17.99.

MACANUDO COMPLETES THE FLINT KNOLL TRIFECTA WITH ESTATE RESERVE RELEASE NO. 3

For the third and final Estate Reserve release, Macanudo has partnered with the award-winning Flint Knoll winery in Napa Valley to craft a cigar with tobacco aged in Cabernet barrels.

Macanudo has aged tobacco in the same French Oak barrels as Flint Knoll’s 2021 Royal Appointment Cabernet Sauvignon, allowing both the wine and the barrel to influence the cigar's flavor.

Flint Knoll Winery is a boutique vineyard specializing in single-vineyard mountain Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. Using solely French Oak barrels from French cooperages, Flint Knoll is a small but highly respected vineyard in the world of fine wines.

Steve Abbot, Director of Marketing, said, "Macanudo’s Estate Reserve offerings are the result of a shared appreciation for two similar crafts. For Estate Reserve No. 3, we were lucky to have great tobaccos and wine come together to create an exceptional cigar.”

Aaron Michaelis, founder of Flint Knoll Winery, said, “2021 was a special year for Napa Valley wine. A lack of rain and lower temperatures brought us an ultra-rare vintage, and you can taste the subtleties in the tobaccos aged in the same barrels.”

Medium-bodied, Macanudo Estate Reserve No. 3’s five-country blend is smooth, creamy and elegant. While smoking, the barrel finishing is evident in vanilla, nuts and cedar notes. It’s a nuanced cigar with nods to Napa wine that can’t be missed.

Macanudo Estate Reserve No. 3 is hand-rolled at General Cigar’s Dominican factory. Macanudo Estate Reserve Release No. 3 comes in a 10-count box at a Churchill (7 X 52) vitola. MSRP is $19.99 per cigar.

Blend:

Wrapper: Ecuadorian Connecticut

Binder: US Broadleaf

Don Doroteo El Alcalde (6 1/4 x 52)

Video review HERE.

(Description taken from Halfwheel.com website)

The name of a new cigar from Don Doroteo translates to The Mayor from Spanish.

El Alcalde is a 6 1/4 x 52 belicoso made up of an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper and binder covering a filler blend of tobaccos grown in Brazil and the Cibao region of the Dominican Republic. According to the company, the El Alcaldes were rolled in 2008 at the La Aurora Cigar Factory in the Dominican Republic, meaning the cigars are more than 15-years-old.

The new cigar will have an MSRP of $29.75 each—or $148.75 for a five-count box. In an email, Lugo told halfwheel that there were only 3,000 cigars made, for a total of 600 five-count boxes.

The new limited edition was created to celebrate the life and accomplishments of Doroteo Fermin Delgado, grandfather of Juan Lugo, who is the founder of Don Doroteo Cigars. In a press release, Delgado is described as having “humble beginnings as a young tobacco farmer” before eventually becoming town mayor of El Caimito Afuera in La Vega, Dominican Republic.

“My grandfather and his example will always be a guiding light for me,” said Lugo in a press release. “Coming from poverty and with little education, he was able to become a respected tobacco grower, and a leader within his community. This cigar is in honor of his accomplishments. El Alcalde is a blend that has gone through extensive aging (15 years), and we are confident that it will be well received.”

The cigar is nicely made and quite beautiful. It has a nice feel in the hand.

The test draw after cutting the cap was good. After lighting the cigar and taking a few puffs the draw got very firm so I used the PerfecDraw to open the draw. The initial flavors at light up were lime, brown sugar, cinnamon, pear, earthiness, and leathery black coffee. There was black pepper rated at 7 1/2 to 8. Pretty good start.

At the first third (26 minutes) the flavors are just like the cigar started and they are mixing well together. The cigar is medium bodied. The finish is lime with leathery black coffee and very good lingering black pepper. The cigar is quite good and a little unique in it's flavors of lime and pear. I rated the first third 94.

As I moved through the second third (54 minutes) the leathery black coffee is up. There's more black coffee than leather, actually. The main front end note is lime and it does not have as much brown sugar backing it up. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is leathery black coffee with very good lingering black pepper. The cigar could use more brown sugar to calm down the lime and black coffee notes. I rated the second third 92.

The cigar lasted 1 hour 24 minutes. The black coffee pulled back and the lime had plenty of nice brown sugar. The pear notes were back and added sweetness. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is unchanged. I rated the final third 94. This is a good cigar that gets a little too much lime and black coffee in the middle section but rebounds nicely.

Craft Maquette La Maestranza (4 1/2 x 56 petit gordo)

Video review HERE.

(Description taken from Halfwheel.com website)

While Maestranza will be a regular production line, the company is previewing it with a limited edition size known as CRAFT Maquette La Maestranza, a 4 1/2 x 56 petit gordo. The Maquette version and the three regular production vitolas use the same blend: a Mexican San Andrés wrapper over a Brazilian binder and fillers from the Dominican Republic, Honduras and Nicaragua. In a post on Instagram, Skip Martin—co-founder of RoMa Craft Tobac—said that the wrapper is a version of tobacco that the company uses for its Neanderthal line, but lighter in color.

CRAFT Maquette La Maestranza has an MSRP of $12.50—it was originally announced as $12—and is limited to 800 bundles of 10 cigars. The first of those bundles will debut on Friday, July 19, at an event at Cigar Den in East Brunswick, N.J. Subsequent events will take place and non-event shipments will go to retailers in August.

Martin says the CRAFT Maquette cigars have been aged for almost one year.

The three regular production sizes will be:

Maestranza Ciutadella Catalonia (4 x 50) — $9 (Box of 40, $360)

Maestranza Castillito Murcia (5 x 60) — $11 (Box of 40, $440)

Maestranza Caballería Valencia (6 x 52) — $10 (Box of 40, $400)

Martin said those are scheduled for Q4 2024.

The cigar is dark brown and has a nice feel in the hand.

The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were orange citrus, peach, brown sugar, and black coffee with a touch of earthiness. There was black pepper rated at 8. Nice start.

At the first third (20 minutes) the ash was still intact. The notes were the same and they're working well together. If you retro hale the black pepper is really nice. The cigar is close to full bodied. I'll call it medium to full but it's really close. The finish is black coffee with very good lingering black pepper. I rated the first third 94.

As I moved through the second third (36 minutes) the ash was still intact. Now there is more black coffee. It takes a little away from the sweet notes. The cigar is now full bodied. It's a low grade full bodied. The finish has some citrus with light black coffee and lingering black pepper. I rated the second third 93.

The cigar lasted 56 minutes. Now the cigar has earthiness to go along with the elevated black coffee. The sweet notes had to suffer a little more. The cigar is a low grade full bodied. The finish is unchanged. The cigar was definitely the best in the first third. But, it's still pretty good. I rated the final third 92.

Isla del Cocodrilo Corona Gorda (5 5/8 x 46)

Video review HERE.

(Description taken from Halfwheel.com and warpedcigars.com websites)

Warped Cigars has announced Isla del Cocodrilo, a new project that it is releasing at the 2024 PCA Convention & Trade Show later this week.

The blend reportedly uses an Ecuadorian habano wrapper, a dual binder of Ecuadorian habano 2000 and Brazilian Arapiraca, and a Nicaraguan filler. It is reportedly being offered in two sizes:

Isla del Cocodrilo Corona Gorda (5 5/8 x 46) — $14 (Box of 15, $210) REVIEWED TODAY

Isla del Cocodrilo Toro (6 x 52) — $15 (Box of 15, $225)

The line is reportedly being produced at TABACALERA LA iSLA in Santiago, Dominican Republic and won’t be shipping until this summer. The line gets its name from a term used to reference the shape of Cuba.

"When we embarked on the journey of sourcing tobacco for this project, we sought something truly extraordinary for the wrapper, and we have achieved just that with the Habano Deflorada" remarked Kyle Gellis. "It adds a layer of complexity and richness to Isla del Cocodrilo, elevating the blends experience to a new flavor spectrum from Warped."

The inspiration behind the name "Island of Crocodile" stems from the island of Cuba, affectionately known as Crocodile Island due to its resemblance to the unique and critically endangered Cuban Crocodile only found in the Zapata Swamp and on the Isle of Youth. This homage pays tribute to the islands storied cigar-making tradition and the allure of its natural landscape.

The cigar is nicely made and has an average feel in the hand.

The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were lemon, brown sugar, and earthy leather. There was black pepper rated at 7. Not a bad start.

At the first third (26 minutes) the ash was still intact and the cigar is burning evenly. There is some underlying nuttiness which I say is an unsalted sunflower seeds. The lemon and brown sugar are more intense. The base flavor is now an earthy, leathery black coffee. The finish is leather with good lingering black pepper. The notes are nice. I rated the first third 94.

As I moved through the second third (51 minutes) there was a lot more earthy, leathery black coffee. The other notes are still in play but they are quickly engulfed by the dark notes. The cigar is medium bodied, leaning toward medium to full. The finish is unchanged. The cigar dipped a bit. I rated the second third 92.

The cigar lasted 1 hour 11 minutes. It made a nice bounce back. The lemon and brown sugar came back to it's first third level and the earthy, leathery black coffee toned down. I didn't have the sunflower notes anymore. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is unchanged. The cigar got good again. I rated the final third 94. This is a pretty good cigar from Warped and available at Smallbatchcigar.com. This link takes you to both the Toro and Corona Gorda sizes. Use code tinytim for 10% off and free shipping.

“The heart of our business has always been putting humble people at the center and honoring those that have molded our lives. The Rose of Sharon has long been considered the ‘heart’ of Southern Draw Cigars, so quite fitting that Casa de Montecristo selected the classic Rose of Sharon blend and commissioned this Salomon size that will only be available at their lounges and retail stores. A beautiful reminder of the grace that Sharon, the blend’s namesake, has bestowed upon each of us at Southern Draw Cigars,” added Robert Holt, Managing Member of Southern Draw Cigars..

The Rose of Sharon Salomon is priced at $12.17 per cigar or $146.04 for a 12-count box.

The cigar is golden brown and has a nice feel in the hand.

The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were apple, lime, brown sugar, and black coffee. There was black pepper rated at 7 1/2. Pretty good start.

At the first third (35 minutes) the apple and lime sort of come across as citrus peel with brown sugar. There is also some chewy nutmeg and light cream in the mix. The finish is black coffee with good lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium bodied. The cigar is burning slowly. Nice burn time. The cigar could use more sweetness. I rated the first third 92.

Moving through the second third (1 hour 10 minutes) the sweetness went up a little. There are primarily the same notes. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is black coffee with very good lingering black pepper. I rated the second third 93.

The cigar lasted 1 hour 42 minutes. The cigar now has some decent sweetness but the black coffee has greatly increased. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is unchanged. The sweet notes are now best described as citrus peel and brown sugar. While they are nice the black coffee is the dominant flavor. I didn't have the nutmeg or cream any more. The enjoyment of the cigar went back to the way it was in the first third. I rated the final third 92. These cigars are beautiful and only available at Casa de Montecristo. If you are a fan of the Rose of Sharon line check these out.
