H. Upmann Nicaragua by A. J. Fernandez (6 x 54)

A.J. Fernandez has once again teamed up with Tabacalera USA to make the H. Upmann Nicaragua. 

The new cigar is described as a reimagining of the H. Upmann brand by AJ Fernandez. The cigar features an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, a Nicaraguan Corojo 99 binder, and a combination of Criollo 98 and Piloto Cubano in the filler. It is also the first H. Upmann cigar to come out of Nicaragua.  The H. Upmann by A.J. Fernandez is available in three sizes: Robusto, Toro, and Churchill. The cigars are packaged in 20 count boxes priced between $7.25 and $7.75.

The cigar is very well made and a beauty to look at. The wrapper is flawless and slightly oily. The cigar has a very dense feel in the hand.

The test draw after cutting the cap was very good. The initial flavors were a tangy, sweet orange citrus, brown sugar, cinnamon and caramel. There were also leather notes and light black coffee at the base.  There was black pepper rated at an 8. The finish is a leathery cream with nice lingering black pepper. 

About 2 inches in (25 minutes) the caramel notes are now more of a whipping cream. They go nicely with the brown sugar and cinnamon. The orange citrus notes are almost an afterthought. The leather is very noticeable but not dominant. There is still light black coffee at the base. The finish is now more of a pronounced buttery cream with some light leather notes. The cigar is a low grade medium to full bodied. 

With about 2 inches remaining (1 hour 8 minutes) the cigar is turning dark. You still have brown sugar, cinnamon, and light whipping cream but the black coffee and leather are the prominent flavors. The cigar is full bodied now. It moved quickly up the ladder.

The cigar had a long burn time; 1 hour 25 minutes. At the end you may get flashes of cedar but primarily there are brown sugar, cinnamon, and whipping cream. There are still lots of leather and black coffee notes. The cigar ended full bodied. I liked this cigar quite a bit. It started nicely and transitioned into a dark noted cigar that still had nice sweetness. At this price point trying this cigar is a no brainer. A. J. Fernandez did a great job for Altadis on this cigar. These will be on my buy-list.
