Viaje Carolina Reaper (4 7/8 x 50)

Video review HERE.

(Description taken from Cigar-Coop.com website)
The Carolina Reaper is the next pepper to be harvested from Viaje Cigar Company. Today, Viaje announced the fourth installment to its series of cigars with a pepper theme, the Viaje Carolina Reaper.

The Carolina Reaper uses all Aganorsa Tobacco and is a Nicaraguan puro.

The cigar will keep to the 4 7/8 x 50 shape of the other Viaje “peppers”. The cigars will be packaged in 25-count boxes.

The cigar is well made and the pic of the foot looks pretty cool.

The test draw after cutting the cap was good considering the foot is rather small. The initial flavors at light up were a lot of earthy black coffee and black pepper, which I rated at a 7 1/2 to 8. There was also light citrus with quite a bit of nutmeg and nice, sweet caramel. The caramel is the primary sweet note.

At the first third (24 minutes) I noticed a flavor that I did not speak about initially; leather. There are light leather notes in this cigar. The citrus seems to be a little more intense and it reminds me of a pink grapefruit. The nutmeg and caramel are still a little more intense than the citrus and the leather notes are mixed in all those flavors. The earthy black coffee is a firm base. The cigar is medium bodied. The finish is one of caramel and nutmeg with some decent lingering black pepper. The first third was a solid 92.

At the midpoint (40 minutes) the citrus notes are very faint. You still have the caramel, light leather, earthy black coffee, and black pepper, but now you also have nice chocolate notes. The caramel remains the main sweet flavor followed by the nutmeg, light leather, chocolate, and black coffee. The finish is now chocolate, nutmeg, and caramel with a nice amount of lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium to full bodied at this point. The addition of chocolate improved the midpoint score to a 93.

The cigar lasted 1 hour 3 minutes. There were no major changes but there were subtle ones so there was no need to come back before now. The chocolate notes became elevated, the caramel notes gave it nice sweetness, there was no more citrus, the leather was light, and the black coffee was elevated. The black pepper also was a solid 8. The finish was unchanged. The cigar reached full bodied in the second half. The second half score dropped back to a 92. These are probably sold out everywhere as they were scooped up quickly when they came out. But, hopefully you can find some. Very good cigar.

Overall Score: 92
