La Aurora Preferidos Ruby Toro (5 1/2 x 54)

Video review HERE.

La Aurora has added a parejo shape to their Preferidos lineup. Today we look at the toro size, a 5 1/2 x 54 offering.

Wrapper: Brazilian maduro
Binder: Dominican Piloto
Filler: Dominican

The cigar is very dark and  has a weighty feel in the hand.

The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were dry cedar, anise, and espresso. There was a ton of espresso. There was black pepper which I rated at a 7. You actually have more lingering pepper on the finish. It's quite a dark noted cigar.

The first third (24 minutes) had the loss of the anise notes. The espresso is as dominant as before but you also have some unsweetened dark chocolate. There were flashes of fudge notes but they were faint. The cedar is more of a straight cedar and it has a minor amount of buttery notes attached. The cigar is by means rich. This is a very dark noted cigar. The cigar is medium bodied with the feel of leaning toward medium to full. The finish is a dry, semi-sweet chocolate with some lingering black pepper. I rated the first third at an 87.

The second third (53 minutes) had the cedar going back to a dry cedar. There are still massive amounts of espresso and dark chocolate with very little sweetness. The cigar remains very dark noted. The cigar is still medium bodied. The finish is still one of an unsweetened chocolate. With the lost of more sweetness I am lowering the 2/3 score to an 85.

The cigar ended at 1 hour 21 minutes. I very good burn time for a 5 1/2" cigar. The same dark notes continued as were noted at the 2/3 point. The cigar is extremely dark noted with little to no sweetness. If you like this type cigar this may be for you. I tend to desire a significant amount of sweetness in an extremely dark noted cigar. The final third score is also an 85.

Overall Score: 85
