Cohiba Connecticut Robusto (5 1/2 x 50)

Video review HERE.

(Description taken from Cigar-Coop.com website)
General Cigar has introduced its first Connecticut Shade cigar in the Cohiba line – its appropriately titled the Cohiba Connecticut.

In addition to an Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper, the blend incorporates a Mexican San Andres binder over a filler consisting of Brazilian Mata Fina, Dominican Piloto Cubano, and Nicaraguan Jalapa leaves.

The cigar will be a regular production offering available in four sizes: Robusto, Crystal Robusto, Toro, and Gigante.

In a press release announcing the Cohiba Connecticut, Cohiba Brand Ambassador Sean Williams said, “Our agronomists partnered with an independent grower in Ecuador’s Los Rios province to produce a silky and lustrous Ecuadoran Connecticut Shade wrapper. Unlike cloth-covered fields that shield the tobacco from the blistering sun in Connecticut, this special wrapper is grown beside Ecuador’s Vinces River and beneath the thick, natural cloud cover that blankets the region. The volcanic soil yielded a wrapper that was intentionally developed for its aesthetic qualities, with veins that are barely perceptible. Looks aside, the wrapper is ideal for blending, as it maximizes the filler and binder leaves.”

The cigar has a nice smooth wrapper and has an average feel in the hand for a robusto.

The test draw after cutting the cap was very good. The initial flavors at light up were a somewhat tangy cedar with spiced apple undertones, some brown sugar, sprinklings of cinnamon, and quite a bit of an earthy black coffee. There was black pepper which I rated at a 7.

At the first third (25 minutes) the cigar settled down into a little different flavor. I didn't have the spiced apple flavor but there were still cedar, brown sugar, and cinnamon notes but they were somewhat subdued. There was also a mix of nutmeg, cream, and very light chocolate. There was still a heavy earthy black coffee base. The finish is a sweet cream and nutmeg with decent lingering black pepper. The cigar is mild to medium bodied. The cigar flavors are nice but nothing is jumping out at me. I rated the first third at 88.

At the second third (52 minutes) I had cedar, touch of cinnamon, very light brown sugar, cream, hints of nutmeg and chocolate, and a very earthy black coffee. The finish is unchanged. The cigar is medium bodied. The cigar is still not popping with me. Perhaps this would make a good morning cigar. The cigar does not have the amount of sweetness that I want. Everything is quite subtle. For the second third I rated the cigar 86.

The cigar lasted 1 hour 15 minutes. Nothing much has changed other than there are hints of the spiced apple flavor again and the cigar is now medium to full bodied. The finish is unchanged in flavor but there is a little more sweetness. This cigar just did not hit on all cylinders with me. But, perhaps it's for you. I rated the final third at 86.

Overall Score: 86.67

I was very disappointed with this cigar. I've smoked Connecticut Shades with price points well below $10 that I've enjoyed immensely. This one is such a dud.
