Hoyo la Amistad Dark Sumatra Medio Noche (5 3/4 x 54)

Video review HERE.

(Description taken from Cigar-Coop.com website)
While General Cigar has been working with AJ Fernandez to create many new blends in its portfolio, they wanted to see what he could do with an old favorite. At this year’s IPCPR Trade Show, General Cigar will unveil the Hoyo La Amistad Dark Sumatra. It’s a new spin on General Cigar’s classic Hoyo de Monterrey Dark Sumatra line.

The original Hoyo de Monterrey Dark Sumatra is a blend that has been in existence for two decades and was produced at the HATSA factory. With Fernandez’s Hoyo La Amistad Dark Sumatra, it uses the same blend, but this time it is rolled by the torcedors at Fernandez’s factory in EstelĂ, Nicaragua – and uses tobaccos fermented and aged under Fernandez’s direction.

The blend itself features an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper over a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper and a combination of Dominican, Honduran, and Nicaraguan tobaccos. The cigars are being released in three sizes.

The Hoyo La Amistad Dark Sumatra is the fourth release under the Hoyo La Amistad line, a collaboration series done between General Cigar and Fernandez.

The cigar is nice looking and has an average feel in the hand.

The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were a cedar/citrus combination, some brown sugar, cinnamon, a lot of a leathery nutmeg, and black coffee. There was black pepper rated at 7 1/2. The nutmeg has a lot of vegetable qualities.

About 3/4 inch in the flavor notes have settled down. Now it's more of a dry cedar, sweet grapefruit citrus, brown sugar, cinnamon, leathery nutmeg, light chocolate notes, and black coffee. The cigar settled down into more of a rounded flavor profile.

At the first third (24 minutes) the ash was still intact and the burn was about perfect. At the first third the cigar had the same flavor notes in this order of appearance: grapefruit citrus, brown sugar, light dry cedar, cinnamon, leathery nutmeg, chocolate, and black coffee. The cigar is medium bodied at this point. The finish is a sweet nutmeg with a moderate amount of lingering black pepper. The cigar has plenty of sweetness but the drawback it has is the over abundance of leathery nutmeg. I rated the first third at 92.

As I moved through the second third (45 minutes) not much changed. I still had the same flavor notes in about the same percentages. The cigar moved to medium to full bodied. The finish was unchanged. I was glad the cigar moved lateral because I thought it could easily go up or down. With nothing really changing I held the score of 92.

The cigar lasted 1 hour 12 minutes. In the final third the leathery nutmeg rose slightly taking away a touch of sweetness. The cigar reached full bodied and the finish was unchanged. This is a good cigar that I could smoke again. I rated the final third 91. You can purchase these cigars in boxes or 5 packs HERE along with the other sizes.

Overall Score: 91.67
