A plumper version of the Viaje Jalapeño is here. It’s the latest installment of Viaje’s popular series paying homage to farm-grown peppers.
Like most of the installments of Viaje’s pepper series, details of the blend have not been disclosed. The Phat Jalapeño measures 5 3/16 x 55. It is a size that was introduced to the series back in November with the 2019 release of the Viaje Ghost Pepper.
Other installments of the pepper series include: Viaje Jalapeño (original), Viaje Ghost Pepper, Viaje GP 10.31, Viaje Carolina Reaper, and Viaje Scotch Bonnet. With the exception of the Phat Jalapeño and the 2019 Ghost Pepper, those other releases were 4 7/8 x 50 figurados.
The cigar is quite oily and very well made.
The test draw after cutting the cap was a bit firm. I used my PerfecDraw tool to open the draw a bit. The initial flavors at light up were very sweet. I had a lot of citrus and chocolate, brown sugar, cinnamon, buttery notes, nutmeg, and black coffee. There was black pepper rated at 7 1/2 to 8. The cigar is quite rich and sweet at the outset. A very good start.
At the first quarter (19 minutes) the cigar continues to be very rich. There are more sweeter notes. Now there are caramel notes. The black pepper seems to be moving up and there is a lot of lingering black pepper. There are lots of sweet chocolate notes. The finish is nutmeg, hint of citrus, and caramel with a nice amount of lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The black coffee has slightly ticked up. The cigar is so sweet and rich. And for a Viaje pepper cigar this one actually has a lot of pepper. Some don't. I rated the first quarter 96.
At the midpoint (44 minutes) the cigar is making some changes. The ring gauge is getting smaller. More nutmeg is coming out and taking away some of the sweetness. You still have the same basic flavors but they are not quite as intense. It's more of a cedar, no more citrus, the caramel is mixing well with the nutmeg, the brown sugar has slightly decreased, you still have chocolate notes and the black coffee base. The cigar is very close to full bodied. The finish is more nutmeg and caramel. The citrus is gone. The black pepper on both ends is still very good although it has toned down a bit on the front end. The cigar is still good but it lost a little. I lowered the midpoint score to 94.
At the 3/4 point (1 hour 5 minutes) the nutmeg is still elevated. Not a lot changed from the midpoint to the 3/4 point but some of the cedar decreased. The chocolate and coffee notes are still good. The other flavor notes slightly decreased but not enough to hurt the cigar very much. The cigar is very full bodied. The finish is unchanged. I lowered the 3/4 point score to 93.
The cigar lasted 1 hour 22 minutes. In the final stages I had a lot of chocolate notes, the sweetness decreased a little, and a lot of black coffee notes. There were also some light cedar notes and a little brown sugar. The cigar remained very full bodied. The finish is chocolate and nutmeg with nice lingering black pepper. While the cigar lost some notes it remains a very good cigar. I rated the cigar in the final quarter 92. Overall this is a very good cigar.
Overall Score: 93.75
