(Description taken from Cigar-coop.com website)
General Cigar has announced a new offering under its Hoyo de Monterrey brand, the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure Selección. This is a line that pays homage to the early days of cigar making in Honduras, tracing back to the 1950s when the Villazon factory was established.

Produced at the HATSA factory in Danlí, Honduras, Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure Selección is a Honduran puro highlighted by a Cuban seed wrapper. It is available in three sizes: No. 1 (5 6/10 x 46), No. 2 (4 9/10 x 50), and Toro Especial (6 x 50). The cigars are packaged in 20-count cabinet style boxes.

The Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure Selección also features an ornate, old world style band.

In a press release, Ed Lahmann, senior brand manager for Hoyo de Monterrey said, “Epicure Selección speaks to the legacy of Hoyo de Monterrey which is one of the first brands to have been made in Honduras, and one of the first to feature bold blends made with native Cuban seeds cultivated in Central America. The history of Hoyo de Monterrey was carved out by some of the most revered tobacco men that ever lived, and we honor their contributions to the handmade cigar category with this new collection.”

The cigar is a medium brown and it has a nice feel in the hand.

The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were cedar, touch of brown sugar, quite a bit of a thick, almost liquid-like nutmeg, quite a bit of leather, and black coffee. There was white pepper rated at 7 1/2. The cedar and brown sugar seem to be encapsulated in the creamy, liquid-like nutmeg. Quickly following those flavors are the massive amounts of leather. It's a fairly worn leather flavor. The black coffee base is rather earthy.

At the first third (36 minutes) the cigar is transitioning into a very heavy nutmeg and leather flavor. The cedar and brown sugar have decreased. There is also an element of bitterness. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is nutmeg and a touch of brown sugar with decent lingering black pepper. The pepper is transitioning over to black pepper. This cigar will appeal to certain people who like a heavy leather and nutmeg flavor. I rated the first third 90.

At the second third (1 hour 10 minutes) you have a touch of cedar and brown sugar right at the initial point you taste flavors. But they are quickly followed by quite a bit of nutmeg and leather. The cigar is still medium to full bodied. The finish has a touch more of brown sugar now to go along with the nutmeg. The cigar's trajectory is an increase in nutmeg and leather. I rated the second third 88.

The cigar lasted 1 hour 27 minutes. For the most part the cigar was about the same in the final third. The cigar remained heavy on the nutmeg and leather. It remained medium to full bodied. The finish was unchanged. This cigar will appeal to those who like a heavy leather and nutmeg flavor. I rated the final third 87. If this sounds like something you would enjoy you can purchase these cigars HERE.
