Video review HERE.
More than twenty years ago, before the cigar boom, J.C. Newman Cigar Company patri-arch
Stanford J. Newman, challenged his good friend Carlos Fuente, Sr. with an idea that had
never been tried in the cigar industry – to develop a rich, flavorful, superb tasting premium
cigar and package it in an inexpensive cellophane bundle, without costly boxes and
trimmings found with other premium cigars. Until that time, factories only packaged their
“seconds” in bundles.
Carlos selected the sizes and Stanford approved the blend – a combination of Cuban seed
Dominican long filler tobaccos specially aged for maximum flavor and smoothness. When
skillfully hand-rolled with a delicate Connecticut shade (light natural) wrapper.
Within six months La Unica became the #1 selling premium bundle cigar in America. Today
La Unica – with the original 1986 blend and smooth rich flavor – pre-serves the history of
the brand. These superb cigars have now grown up from their bundle days and are elegantly
packaged in custom cedar cabinets of 20. Despite the maturity of the pack-aging, we have
not strayed from our roots and the original hand selected, perfectly aged blend of tobaccos
that make La Unica a favorite.
Wrapper: Connecticut Shade
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic
Size: 4 1/2” X 50
The cigar is well made and appears to be a soft box press.
The test draw after cutting the fairly flat cap was very good. The initial flavors at light up were a somewhat tangy cedar, brown sugar, cinnamon, dry hay, underlying cream, and earthy black coffee. There was black pepper rated at 7. The cigar has a lot of Connecticut attributes.
At the first third (21 minutes) you have the same basic flavors as previously described. The hay notes are combining with the brown sugar. The cream notes are light. The cigar is mild to medium bodied. The finish is hay and brown sugar. The lingering black pepper is pretty good. The cigar has plenty of sweetness at this point. It's also quite light. I rated the first third 90.
Moving through the second third (42 minutes) the hay notes have moved forward. The sweetness dipped when the hay notes increase. The cream and earthy black coffee also increased. The tangy cedar is now straight cedar. The cigar is medium bodied at best. And, the finish also has more hay notes. The cigar took some major changes. I rated the second third 87.
The cigar lasted 1 hour. At the end I had cedar, brown sugar, touch of cinnamon, hay, toasted cream, and earthy black coffee. The black pepper increased. The finish is hay and brown sugar with good lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium bodied. In this case the toasted cream did not help the cigar. It didn't seem to go with the other flavors. This cigar is rather light and would make a good beginner cigar. It's a little too light for a seasoned smoker. But, it may make a good morning cigar with a cup of black coffee. I rated the final third 86. If you would like to try these cigars you can purchase them HERE.
