Cohiba Weller (5 1/2 x 50)

Video review HERE.

(Description provided by General Cigar)

Developed in partnership with Weller Bourbon, the limited edition Cohiba cigar was blended to complement Weller Bourbon, a rare and highly-coveted wheated bourbon prized by connoisseurs for its sophisticated, moderately sweet taste and intensely smooth finish.

Cohiba Brand Ambassador Sean Williams said, “We blended Weller by Cohiba to be the ultimate cigar for spirits connoisseurs. The experience is rich and layered, imparting notes of cocoa, espresso and leather on the palate before cascading to a luxurious finish. While the depth and complexity of this cigar make it the ideal choice for pairing with your favorite spirit, Weller by Cohiba is equally as extraordinary when savored on its own.”

Dressed in a hearty, full-bodied Honduran San Agustin Ligero wrapper and bound with Connecticut Havano Medio Tiempo, the blend is made with hand-selected tobaccos from Esteli and the remote volcanic island of Ometepe in Nicaragua.

Weller by Cohiba is a limited edition release. Cohiba will not disclose the number of cigars being produced by the artisans at General Cigar Dominicana in Santiago, DR.

The blend will be launched in one size, a 5.5” x 50 Robusto featuring Cohiba and Weller Bourbon branding elements and presented in an elegant glass tube.

Weller by Cohiba will sell for a suggested retail price of $19.99 per cigar or $199.90 for a box containing ten cigars. This exquisite release will be available through fine cigar shops across the U.S. and began shipping to select retailers on July 1.

Future collaborations between Cohiba and Weller Bourbon are currently being explored.

The cigar's presentation is very nice. The cigar comes in a glass tube and the cigar itself is very dark; almost black. It has an average feel in the hand.

The test draw after removing the cigar from the tube and cutting the cap was very good. The initial flavors at light up were raisin, chocolate, and black coffee with underlying nutmeg that is smooth and creamy. There was black pepper rated at 7 1/2. The cigar has a nice start.

At the first third (35 minutes) there was a rather bad burn going on. I decided to touch it up as I did not feel it would improve on it's own. The raisin and chocolate notes are still there and there is a lot more nutmeg. There is what seems to be a cocoa presence. The cigar is not quite as sweet as the start. The nutmeg is rather pasty and it's taking away from the sweeter notes. The finish is that pasty nutmeg with a touch of chocolate with very low lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium bodied. I rated the first third 89.

As I moved through the second third (1 hour) the cigar is getting much darker. There now is dark chocolate and black coffee for the main flavors. The sweetness has really decreased. The raisin notes that were so prominent at the beginning are now just a faint remembrance of what they were. The finish is nutmeg and black coffee with a modest improvement in the lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium to full bodied. How this pairs with Weller bourbon is unknown to me as I do not have any to pair with the cigar. As with all my reviews I drink water only. I am describing the flavor notes in the cigar only. I rated the second third 87.

The cigar lasted 1 hour 16 minutes. For me, the cigar went downhill. There is a lot of dark chocolate and black coffee with very little sweetness. The cigar is pretty much full bodied. The cigar is not terrible but it's not something that appeals to me. I rated the final third 84. At $20 apiece this is not a cigar I would purchase again but I would be interested to hear how it actually pairs with Weller bourbon. I hope it goes well.
