Punch Aniversario 2021 (7 1/4 x 54)

(Description taken from Cigar-coop.com website)

While it’s slightly late, General Cigar has announced a cigar to commemorate the 180th anniversary of the Punch brand. The cigar is appropriately called the Punch Aniversario.

The Punch brand was created in 1840 as a cigar for export to the United Kingdom. Today, the U.S. version of the brand is produced primarily in Honduras. This year’s Punch Aniversario is a limited edition offering. The blend is produce at the HATSA factory in Danlí, Honduras and features a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper that was given additional cedar aging to enhance the tobacco and create a deeper, richer profile. The blend also uses Connecticut Broadleaf binder over proprietary filler leaves from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and Honduras. The cigar is available in a single size – a 7 1/4 x 54 Double Corona. A total of 3,400 ten-count boxes will be released exclusively to Brick and Mortar retailers in September.

Ed Lahmann, senior brand manager of Punch, said, “Perhaps more than any other handmade cigar brand that has graced a tobacconist’s humidor, Punch has been symbolic of a trailblazer, a maverick and one who is unapologetically self-assured in their choices. Today, we celebrate Punch as the first name in Honduran-crafted cigars with this special release. We look forward to upholding the brand’s legacy for today’s Punch loyalists and the next generation of Punch enthusiasts.”

The cigar is dark brown and has a very dense feel in the hand.

The test draw after cutting the dome cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were gotten very quickly. They were sweet apricot with citrus notes mixed in, brown sugar, nutmeg, honey, and black coffee. There was black pepper initially rated at 7. Nice, sweet start.

At the first third (41 minutes) the cigar is very much like it started. The only difference is the nutmeg is a little more pronounced and very creamy. I still had the apricot, citrus, honey, brown sugar, and black coffee also. Not much changed. The finish is apricot and citrus with a little nutmeg and pretty good lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium bodied at this point. I rated the first third 93.

Moving through the second third (1 hour 22 minutes) The cigar continues to be fairly consistent but now the overall scope is a little earthier. The flavor notes are still there and the cigar is still quite enjoyable but it's a little earthy. The cigar is medium bodied, leaning toward medium to full. The finish is unchanged. The earthiness did not hurt the cigar too much. I rated the second third 92.

The cigar lasted 2 hours. At a price tag of $14.25 each you get a lot of bang for your buck. A very good burn time. In the final third the notes changed a little. Now there are nice, sweet citrus notes, creamy nutmeg, brown sugar, and black coffee. The citrus notes are very nice. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is pretty much unchanged but it now has a little more nutmeg and some earthiness. I rated the final third 93. This is a good cigar from Punch and well worth trying.

Overall Score: 92.67
