ACE Prime has announced the Fiat Lux by Luciano, its second release which will join the company’s Luciano line and become the first core offering under that header.
The cigar uses a high-priming Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper over a Nicaraguan-grown binder and filler, the latter of which comes from the Pueblo Nuevo, Jalapa and Ometepe regions. It was blended by Luciano Meirelles, master blender, president and co-owner of ACE Prime, with the company saying it is a blend that generates deliberation and provokes an exploration of flavors.
“In my 30-plus years blending and smoking cigars I’ve never experienced a cigar that actually cleans your palate while delivering so much flavor,” said Eradio Pichardo, co-owner and co-founder of ACE Prime and Tabacalera Pichardo. “Every draw is a journey. I’ve been smoking Fiat Lux lately to increase my awareness and appreciation for other blends. It truly elevates your knowledge and certainly translates the essence of my business partner Luciano. After the Traveler and Dreamer I wasn’t sure what he would blend, but Fiat Lux exceeded all expectations and set a new standard,” he added.
The cigar gets its name from a Latin expression that means “let there be light,” and while it has biblical roots, it is often referred to for its usage during the intellectual movement of the Enlightenment.
It is being released in four sizes:
Fiat Lux by Luciano Acumen (6 x 56) — $10.75 (Box of 20, $215)
Fiat Lux by Luciano Geniuses (5 1/2 x 52) — $10 (Box of 20, $200)
Fiat Lux by Luciano Intuitions (5 x 50) — $9.50 (Box of 20, $190)
Fiat Lux by Luciano Insight (5 5/8 x 46) — $8.75 (Box of 20, $175) REVIEWED TODAY
The cigar has a very clean looking band and has an average feel in the hand.
The test draw after cutting the cap was a bit firm but workable. The initial flavors at light up were a peach/citrus, brown sugar, heavy nutmeg, light leather, light citrus peel, and black coffee. There was black pepper rated at 7 to 7 1/2.
At the first third (22 minutes) the ash was still intact and looked very firm. The cigar is a lot like it started. I still had the peach/citrus, brown sugar, nutmeg which is quite high, much elevated citrus peel, leather, and black coffee. The cigar is quite sweet but there are equal amounts of nutmeg, leather, and black coffee. The finish is nutmeg and light peach notes with average lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium bodied at this point. The cigar is nice but the citrus peel and nutmeg notes need to reduce. I rated the first third 93.
As I moved through the second third (45 minutes) an interesting thing happened. When I take in the smoke and hold it I can clearly taste the nice, sweet notes. As soon as I expel the smoke there is a massive amount of leather, nutmeg, and citrus peel flavor. The sweeter notes do not carry over when you expel the smoke. The cigar is now medium to full bodied. The finish is unchanged. I'm not a fan of the loss of sweeter notes when you expel the smoke. But the cigar still has nice notes in spite of that "problem". I rated the second third 91.
The cigar lasted 1 hour 6 minutes. The "problem" sort of improved. Now when I expel the smoke I can taste some citrus notes. It's more of a normal flavor progression. The sweeter notes on the front end bounced back a bit but not quite to the level of the first third. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is unchanged. This is actually a nice cigar but the middle third was a little whacky. I rated the final third 92.
