Rafael Nodal, co-owner of Boutique Blends, is teaming up again with AJ Fernandez to launch a new project called Aging Room by Rafael Nodal Rare Collection. As the name indicates, it is a cigar that features specially selected rare tobaccos.

The cigars in the Aging Room by Rafael Nodal Rare Collection are 100% Nicaraguan puros. They are highlighted by an oily Nicaraguan wrapper with a pig-tail cap. The collection will be launched in three sizes – each presented in ten-count boxes.

“This is not just an updated cigar; this is the first in what will be several Rare Collection projects,” said Nodal, who is Head of Product Capability for Tabacalera USA. The Rare Collection series is intended to offer small runs based on the availability of rare and superbly well-aged tobaccos.

“With the Aging Room by Rafael Nodal Rare Collection, we are offering adult consumers a complex, medium-full bodied, Nicaraguan blend containing some of the rarest and most well-aged tobaccos of any cigar we’ve released to date,” Nodal said.

The cigar looks nice and has a large pigtail at the cap.

The cigar has a nice feel in the hand.

The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were citrus, citrus peel, light peach notes, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, light leather, and black coffee. There was black pepper rated at 7 1/2 to 8. Nice start.

At the first third (33 minutes) I got light almond notes. This was unexpected from an all Nicaraguan cigar. They are in the middle of all the flavors and not intrusive at all. I still had citrus, peach, citrus peel, brown sugar, cinnamon, light leather, and black coffee. I really notice the cinnamon notes. The finish is citrus and brown sugar with very good lingering black pepper. The black pepper is especially good in you retrohale. The cigar is medium bodied at this point. I rated the first third 94.

Moving through the second third (1 hour 3 minutes) the cigar was much like it started but there is some earthiness now. I still had citrus, citrus peel, brown sugar, cinnamon, light leather, and black coffee. The peach notes aren't really there anymore. The finish is citrus, light leather, and brown sugar with very good lingering black pepper. The cigar is now medium to full bodied. The pepper is very good in this cigar. The cigar is very close to what it was in the first third but it lost a tick. I rated the second third 93.

The cigar lasted 1 hour 23 minutes. The sweeter notes bounced back and the earthiness decreased, so the cigar is pretty much back to the way it was in the first third. The notes are citrus, cedar, brown sugar, cinnamon, light nutmeg, light leather, and black coffee. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is light citrus, nutmeg, and very good lingering black pepper. The pepper and cinnamon are very good in this cigar. Overall it's a good initial offering in the Rare Collection line. I look forward to the next addition. I rated the final third 94.

Overall Score: 93.67
