Warped Companion (4 1/2 x 48)

(Description taken from cigaraficionado.com website)

Warped Cigars has just released a new single-size smoke called Companion. It’s the second Warped cigar made in the Dominican Republic at Tabacalera La Isla and it also marks the second time that Warped has launched a product with a Mexican wrapper.

Shipping to retailers today, Companion comes in only one size—a robusto measuring 4 1/2 inches long by 48 ring gauge—and showcases a dark Mexican San Andrés cover leaf. Underneath is a Dominican Criollo ’98 binder and filler of predominantly Dominican tobacco with some Nicaraguan leaf accounting for about 20 percent of the blend. It comes in slide-lid wooden boxes of 25, and has a suggested retail price of $12 each. The cigars are intended to be medium bodied.

“I have only used San Andrés wrapper once before, with El Oso Mama at El Titan de Bronze,” said brand owner Kyle Gellis, referring to the small factory in Miami. “The reason I never used it until now was that I simply could not find the quality that stood up to Warped standards. When I was in Santiago and sourcing material for a few of our new blends, I came across this wrapper and instantly knew this was something I wanted to work with.”

This is the second cigar made for Warped at Tabacalera La Isla, following the release of the Dominican Chinchalle.

The cigar is very dark and has an average feel in the hand.

The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were a little sweetness from brown sugar, dry cocoa, roasted almonds, unsweetened dark chocolate, and earthy black coffee. There was black pepper rated at 8. A very dark start.

At the first third (23 minutes) it appears Warped is going after the dark noted clientele. The predominant flavors are unsweetened dark chocolate and earthy black coffee. There are still light brown sugar, cocoa, and roasted almond notes. The cigar is medium bodied. The finish is unsweetened dark chocolate and black coffee with light almond notes with pretty good lingering black pepper. The black pepper on the front end has toned down to 7. The cigar is not grabbing me due to it's lack of sweetness. I rated the first third 89.

As I moved through the second third (46 minutes) the brown sugar got even fainter. There is a ton of unsweetened dark chocolate and earthy black coffee. The cigar is very, very dark with minimal sweetness. The finish now has cedar, unsweetened dark chocolate, and black coffee with pretty good lingering black pepper. The cigar is still medium bodied. At the midpoint there was a flash of what appeared to be influence from the Nicaraguan tobacco. I had light citrus notes. I had hoped they would develop but sadly, they did not. They were just a flash. I rated the second third 87.

The cigar lasted 1 hour. The final third is exactly like the second third. Nothing changed. The finish is unchanged. The cigar is still medium bodied although it seems to be leaning toward medium to full. This is a very dark noted cigar with minimal sweetness. The lack of sweetness holds it down for me. I rated the final third 87 since nothing had changed. This particular Warped cigar just didn't do much for me.

Overall Score: 87.67
