The Tuxtla Series is debuting with three cigars, the Avion 13, Tatuaje 7th, and the Tatuaje T110. The line gets its name from San Andrés Tuxtla, the city and municipality that is home to the vast majority of Mexico’s premium cigar industry, including its tobacco growing region.

The Tatuaje 7th Tuxtla is a 5 5/8 x 46 corona that comes with an MSRP of $9.50 per cigar and is also limited to 2,000 boxes of 25 cigars. It is a variant on the Tatuaje Seleccion de Cazador 7th, which dates back more than a decade and has previously been offered in three wrapper options: an Ecuadorian habano, an Ecuadorian Sumatra, and a Connecticut broadleaf, all of which use a dual binder of Nicaraguan tobacco and a Nicaraguan filler.

Pete Johnson said, “I’m excited for people to try these cigars. The San Andrés wrapper really shows how much the wrapper can change the flavor of a cigar. We are very particular when using San Andrés making sure we use it on blends that can stand up to the heavier flavor. I think these blends work perfectly.”

This is not Tatuaje’s first foray into using Mexican tobacco, having released the Tatuaje Mexican Experiment and Tatuaje ME II lines in 2019, both of which were follow-ups to limited releases he created using Mexican San Andrés wrappers in 2012. Johnson has also used a Mexican-grown wrapper on The Face, the third installment of the Monster Series, and on releases for the Tobacconists’ Association of America, including the Tatuaje TAA 51th that was released in 2019.

Johnson is planning to add more cigars to the Tuxtla series in the future, and that some of the releases could end up becoming full production offerings.

The cigar is dark and well made. It has an average feel in the hand.

The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were toffee, brown sugar, cedar, black coffee, and light leather. There was black pepper rated at 8.

At the first third the notes were toffee, brown sugar, nutmeg, light leather, and black coffee. The finish was leather. There is quite a bit of nutmeg in the mix. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The toffee notes are nice. The sweet toffee notes decreased from the light up to the first third. I rated the first third 91.

Moving through the second third the toffee notes got light. There was some earthiness, leather, and much increased black coffee. The finish was leather. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The increased black coffee and earthiness hurt the cigar, in my opinion. I rated the second third 89.

The cigar ended with light toffee, light brown sugar, leather, black coffee, and some earthiness. The black pepper is still very good and I'd rate it around an 8. The cigar is full bodied. The finish is leather. I the lowered the score to 87. This is a dark noted cigar that starts with some nice sweetness but it deceases and the black coffee increases.

Overall Score: 89
