Crowned Heads has announced the return of the Las Calaveras Edición Limitada (EL) 2022, the ninth installment of the annual series that pays homage to the Year of the Dead. For the first time in the series, the Las Calaveras will be a Nicaraguan puro.
Las Calaveras was first launched in 2014 and has been an annual release. Las Calaveras pays homage to those who have passed away over the past year. As opposed to being a mournful symbol, it is intended to be a celebration of those lives and remembrances of those who are no longer with us. As with most of the previous blends, the bands of each release of Las Calaveras have contained the initials of four deceased individuals.
Las Calaveras EL 2022 consists of a Nicaraguan Corojo wrapper and Nicaraguan binder and filler – marking the first time Sumatra has been used on a Las Calaveras blend. The cigars will be released in four sizes: LC46 (5 3/4 x 46), LC52 (5 x 52), LC54 (6 1/2 x 54), and Petit Lancero (6 1/2 x 40). The Petit Lancero will be available as a part of a four-count sampler featuring one of each of the Las Calaveras EL 2022 sizes. The LC46, LC52, and LC54 will be available in 24-count boxes. Production is handled by My Father Cigars in Estelí, Nicaragua – who has produced every release of Las Calaveras to date. Production has been allocated to 1,500 boxes per size and an additional 2,500 of the sampler boxes. Pricing ranges from $11.95 to $13.95 per cigar.
“This is the second consecutive year that we’ve introduced a new wrapper to the Las Calaveras marca,” commented Crowned Heads co-founder Jon Huber in a press release. “The corona oscuro wrapper results in a flavor profile that, in my opinion is reminiscent of the signature ‘My Father’ style of delivering classic Nicaraguan structure and intensity, while retaining complexity and balance.”

The cigar is a medium brown in color and has an average feel in the hand.
The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were a sweet, tangy citrus/peach, brown sugar, and light leather. There was black pepper rated at 7 1/2. Nice start.
At the first third (23 minutes) there are nice peppery notes all throughout the cigar. The notes now are citrus/peach, brown sugar, nutmeg, leather, and earthy black coffee. The finish is a little peach and leather with very good lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium bodied. Instead of getting the pepper in one mass it seems to be sprinkled in all the flavors throughout the cigar. I rated the first third 93. I'm hoping it can hold that score as Las Calaveras have been hit and miss for me over the years.
Moving through the second third (45 minutes) I was pleasantly surprised. The cigar is hanging in there! Overall I had the same flavor notes. I would suggest you go slowly. Going too fast will cause you to lose these notes. I had light peach, brown sugar, nutmeg, leather, and earthy black coffee. The black pepper is still good throughout. I held the score of 93.
The cigar lasted 1 hour 9 minutes. The cigar tried to hold on but it did slip a little. The cigar got quite earthy. The black coffee is up, the leather is a little subdued, and the sweeter notes suffered. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is leather with very good lingering black pepper. The black pepper on the front end is at least 8 now. It's very good. The increased earthiness and reduction in sweetness hurt the cigar. I rated the final third 91. It's still good but not as good as the first two thirds. Not a bad offering from Las Calaveras.
