HVC Selección No. 1 Poderosos (6 x 54)

Video review HERE.

(Description taken from Halfwheel.com website)

Earlier this year, HVC Cigars opened up its own factory in Estelí, Nicaragua and now the company is ready to release the first line from the new factory.

The factory is called Fábrica de Tabacos HVC S.A. de Reinier Lorenzo and the cigar will be called Selección No. 1. It uses a Mexican San Andrés wrapper over a Nicaraguan binder and fillers from Estelí and Jalapa, Nicaragua. Reinier Lorenzo, HVC’s founder, told halfwheel that he wanted to pay tribute to the old Cuban style.

There are three regular production sizes and the cigar began shipping to stores at the end of July:

HVC Selección No. 1 Short Robustos (4 1/2 x 52)

HVC Selección No. 1 Esenciales (5 5/8 x 46)

All three vitolas will come in boxes of 20.

Lorenzo said that as of now, Selección No. 1 is the only line being made at the new factory, which currently has five pairs of bunchers and rollers.

“I went to the old classic Cuban style,” said Lorenzo. “I never forget where I came from Havana City and also I don’t want, later in life, to regret not opening my own cigar factory.”

The cigar is dark and well made. It has a nice feel in the hand.

The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were citrus peel, brown sugar, nutmeg, and a lot of black coffee. There was a lot of black pepper rated at 8 to 8 1/2. A very dark start with nice brown sugar sweetness.

At the first third (35 minutes) I noticed the cigar is burning very slowly. Some nice citrus notes emerged in the first third to go along with the citrus peel, brown sugar, nutmeg, and earthy black coffee. The cigar is already full bodied. The finish is brown sugar, nutmeg, and citrus with very good lingering black pepper. The cigar is very tasty at this point. Powerful, sweet, and dark. I rated the first third 94.

Moving through the second third (1 hour 9 minutes) the black coffee and nutmeg really rose taking some of the sweet notes away. The same notes are there but you'll notice the uptick in nutmeg and black coffee. The cigar is very full bodied. The finish is now citrus peel and black coffee with very good lingering black pepper. The cigar is still good but with the elevated nutmeg and black coffee I rated the second third 92.

The cigar lasted 1 hour 39 minutes. A very good burn time. The black coffee and nutmeg continued to rise and even more so in the final third. There are only light notes of citrus and hardly any brown sugar. The cigar continues to be very full bodied. The finish is a touch of citrus and nutmeg with very good lingering black pepper. The black pepper has been very good throughout. The cigar started to lose me a little in the final third with the increase of black coffee and nutmeg. I rated it 88. Overall a good cigar and a good first edition from their new factory.

Overall Score: 91.33
