Venture 1492 is a sister project to Warped Cigars, the entity was announced last a year as a consulting service for other cigar companies that could assist with branding, distribution and other aspects of the cigar making process. Now, it’s getting its own cigar.
The Venture 1492 Gran Corona is a 5 1/2 x 48 parejo that uses a Mexican San Andrés wrapper over a binder from Cotúi, Dominican Republic and fillers from Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. It has an MSRP of $10 per cigar and is offered in boxes of 25 cigars.
TABACALERA LA iSLA—located in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic—is producing the cigar.
The cigar is a reddish brown and well made. It has an average feel in the hand.
The test draw after cutting the cap was very good. The initial flavors at light up were apricot, a little citrus peel, brown sugar, earthiness, and leather. There was black pepper rated at 7 1/2. Pretty good start.
At the first third (27 minutes) I had a very pronounced apricot. It's very sweet. There was also brown sugar, earthiness, leather, and black coffee. The cigar is very meaty. It's thick and chewy. The finish is light apricot and black coffee with good lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium bodied. The cigar is quite tasty. I rated the first third 93.
Moving through the second third (52 minutes) the earthiness has increased quite a bit along with the black coffee. The leather is moderate. The nice apricot notes that were so prominent in the first third are downplayed. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish has a hint of apricot and leather with good lingering black pepper. The cigar took a little turn. I rated the second third 89.
The cigar lasted 1 hour 10 minutes. The cigar kept going in the same direction. I had minor hints of apricot, quite a bit of earthiness, quite a bit of black coffee, and now quite a bit of leather. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is unchanged and has very good lingering black pepper. This cigar is very close to being very good. The first third was very good. I rated the final third 86.
