Mofongo joins the company’s White Label Project, which is generally used to launch new cigars before they get their own branding. It is also a 6 x 52 toro, but uses an Ecuadorian corojo wrapper atop a Dominican binder and fillers from the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. Pricing is set at $9.68 per cigar, with production limited to 300 boxes of 25 cigars, a total run of 7,500 sticks.
The Viaje WLP Mofongo gets its name from a popular dish throughout the Caribbean that uses mashed plantains as the base, with garlic, olive oil, chicarrón, and other ingredients added in and then generally served alongside a beef broth.
The cigar is dark and well made. It has a nice feel in the hand.
The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were light citrus, citrus peel, and brown sugar, but there was quite a bit of nutmeg and earthy leather. There was black pepper rated at 7 to 7 1/2. Not a great start. The sweet notes have to greatly increase.
At the first third (30 minutes) there is a little more citrus and brown sugar, a little citrus peel, but those flavors are quickly washed away by the nutmeg and earthy leather. The finish is leather with average lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium bodied. At this point the cigar is just under something I would want to smoke again. I rated the first third 89.
As I moved through the second third (1 hour 3 minutes) the cigar is going in the wrong direction. Now I had hints of citrus peel with very light brown sugar, lots of nutmeg and earthy leather. The finish is leather with good lingering black pepper. The lingering black pepper has somewhat improved. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The cigar doesn't have much in the way of sweet notes. It's quite heavy on nutmeg and earthy leather. I rated the second third 84.
The cigar lasted 1 hour 24 minutes. Or, I should say that's where I ended it. The cigar was not improving. In fact, it got a little worse. Now there are only slight hints of citrus peel and brown sugar. The nutmeg and earthy leather are even more pronounced. There's even some bitterness. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is unchanged. This cigar didn't do it for me. It's lacking significantly in sweet notes. There's too much nutmeg and earthy leather. I rated the final third 82.
