United Cigars Firecracker (3 1/2 x 50 Short Robusto)

United Cigars has updated the look of its regular production Firecracker and begun shipping it to retailers.

The regular production Firecracker is a 3 1/2 x 50 short robusto that uses an Ecuadorian habano wrapper, Dominican piloto mejorado binder, and a mix of Dominican seco and ligero along with Nicaraguan ligero in the filler. It has an MSRP of $5.99 per cigar and is offered in 25-count boxes, with production handled by the Magia Cubana factory in Santiago, Dominican Republic.

The concept debuted in 2006 as a Don Pepin Garcia Blue Label shop exclusive for Two Guys Smoke Shop in New Hampshire. It became known for its strength and small format, as well as a long, wick-style cap that is designed to evoke the image of a firecracker. Other well-known manufacturers have also produced their own limited-edition versions of Firecrackers—sharing the unique size and wick-style cap—including Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust, Fratello, HVC, Kristoff La Flor Dominicana, Perdomo and RoMa Craft Tobac; the next release is from Foundation Cigar Co. and slated to arrive this summer.

While the cigar—both the regular version and the limited editions—were originally made for Two Guys Smoke Shop, it has since moved into the portfolio of United Cigars; David Garofalo owns both the retailer and the distributor.

The cigar is short and well made. It has a rather light feel in the hand and features an unfinished foot.

The test draw after cutting the cap was very good. The initial flavors at light up were a cedar/citrus combination with nice brown sugar and earthy black coffee. There was black pepper rated at 7 1/2. Nice, sweet start.

At the first third (16 minutes) there was a little more pronounced citrus, some cedar, quite a bit of brown sugar, and a leathery, earthy black coffee. The cigar is pretty balanced. The cigar is medium bodied but it is moving up. The finish is a leathery black coffee with very good lingering black pepper. Nice flavors. I rated the first third 93.

Moving through the second third (27 minutes) I didn't notice much changing. The same notes were there. The only change is the strength is now medium to full bodied. Still good. I held the score of 93 for the second third.

The cigar lasted a quick 38 minutes. In the final third the citrus and brown sugar came out a little more. Everything else is about the same. The cigar is very close to full bodied. The finish is unchanged. I thought the cigar improved in this section. I rated the final third 94. Good, quick cigar.

Overall Score: 93.33
