Wise Blood gets its name from a book of the same name that was the first novel by Flannery O’Connor, a Georgia native. The company describes it as the story of a Southern veteran in the mid-20th century who struggles to reconcile his convictions and deep faith with his lived experience. Wise Blood was also turned into a film that was released in 1979.
“Flannery O’Connor and her Southern Gothic portfolio have had a profound influence on me,” said Leroy Lamar, president of ATL Cigar Co., via a press release. “Wise Blood, in particular, helps me wrestle with faith, race, my relationships with my co-founders, and frankly, my place in this world. We are proud to create a cigar that reflects these deep questions and commemorates such an important work and author.”
The Wise Blood line features an Ecuadorian habano rosado HVA wrapper atop an Ecuadorian Connecticut binder and fillers from three undisclosed regions of Nicaragua. ATL Cigar Co. calls it a mild-to-medium-bodied profile, and is offering it in four vitolas, each of which will be offered in bundles and boxes of 20 cigars:
ATL Cigar Co. Wise Blood Lonsdale (6 1/2 x 42) — $9.99
ATL Cigar Co. Wise Blood Robusto (5 1/4 x 54) — $10.49
ATL Cigar Co. Wise Blood Robusto Extra (6 x 50) — $10.99 REVIEWED TODAY
ATL Cigar Co. Wise Blood Gordito (4 x 60) — $11.99
The cigars are being produced by Luciano Cigars at its factory in EstelĂ, Nicaragua.
The cigar is nicely made and has an average feel in the hand.
The test draw after cutting the cap was very good. The initial flavors at light up were peach, brown sugar, cinnamon, earthiness, and light leather. There was black pepper rated at 7 1/2. Pretty good start.
At the first third (21 minutes) there's a lot of earthiness. The leather is an old, worn leather. The other notes are still there; peach, brown sugar, and cinnamon but they can't quite shine as much as they should with the earthiness. The cigar is medium bodied. The finish is peach with light leather and good lingering black pepper. The cigar is pretty good even with all the earthiness. I rated the first third 93.
Moving through the second third (45 minutes) the earthiness is slowly creeping up. I still had the same notes but the earthiness is slowly increasing. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is unchanged. The black pepper seems to have moved up slightly. It is around 8 and it works side by side with the earthiness. I rated the second third 92.
The cigar lasted 1 hour 8 minutes. The earthiness continued to slowly rise. I had the same notes and the cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is unchanged. The only thing that happened was a little more earthiness. So I rated the final third 91. This is a pretty good cigar which could be much better, in my opinion, if it weren't so earthy.
