Black Works Studio has released the new Rorschach Sumatra. The original Rorschach is definitely a big cigar in a small package. The new Sumatran version is a lighter profile highlighting Jalapa tobacco. Layers of soft cedar, cinnamon and mild pepper create a complex profile with a long creamy finish,” says James Brown, creator of BLTC/BLK WKS and partner at Fabrica Oveja Negra.

The original Rorschach blend that debuted in December 2015.

As the name suggests, it uses a Sumatra wrapper, also grown in Indonesia, while the binder is a Nicaraguan habano leaf and the filler comes from Nicaragua. It is being offered in a short robusto vitola that measures 4 1/2 x 48 priced at $7 per cigar and is offered in 50-count boxes.

The cigar has an average feel in the hand.

The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were a cedar, citrus, a lot of brown sugar, cinnamon, a lot of earthiness, and leather. The earthiness is a scratchy type of flavor/feeling combining with the black pepper, which I rated at 7 1/2 to 8. Nice start.

At the first third (12 minutes) (yes, it's that quick) I had light cedar, some citrus, brown sugar, a lot of cinnamon, increased earthiness, and light leather. The cigar is medium bodied. The finish is leather with good lingering black pepper. The cigar is very sweet and the earthiness is not hurting it right now. The sweet flavors are very candy-like. I rated the first third 95.

Moving through the second third (28 minutes) the notes were cedar with brown sugar (the citrus has tailed off), cinnamon, increased earthiness, and light leather. The black pepper continues to mix with the earthiness. The cigar is medium bodied. The finish is unchanged. With the loss of citrus notes and increased earthiness I lowered the score to 93.

The cigar lasted a very fast 40 minutes. The earthiness continued to slowly rise. There was light citrus and cedar, light brown sugar and cinnamon, quite a bit of earthiness, and light leather. The cigar is still medium bodied. The finish is leather with a little cinnamon and very good lingering black pepper. The cigar is still good but with the increased earthiness I lowered the score to 92. This is a good cigar but a little earthy.

Overall Score: 93.33
