For the 10th edition of its Black Friday series of limited edition cigars, HVC Cigars is releasing its thickest Black Friday cigar to date.
The HVC Black Friday 2023 is a 4 1/2 x 56 petit gordo that uses a Mexican San Andrés wrapper over a Nicaraguan binder and fillers from Nicaragua. The company says those Nicaraguan tobaccos are visos and secos—meaning the tobaccos come from the lower two-thirds of a plant—from Jalapa.
Each cigar will have an MSRP of $9.80 per cigar and production is limited to 600 boxes of 50 cigars.
Black Friday is created for the American shopping holiday that takes place the day after Thanksgiving; this year’s Black Friday will take place on Nov. 24. As such, the company will ship the cigars to stores later this month so that they are on shelves ahead of the holiday.
The HVC Black Friday 2023 is made at the company’s factory in Nicaragua, Fábrica de Tabacos HVC S.A. de Reinier Lorenzo.
The cigar is short and fat and very dark. It has a pretty good feel in the hand for a short cigar.
The test draw after cutting the cap was a little firm but I decided to give it a try. The initial flavors at light up were a sweet, tangy peach, brown sugar, dark chocolate, and black coffee. There was black pepper rated at 7 to 7 1/2. Pretty good start.
At the first third (25 minutes) the draw was still firm so I used the PerfecDraw tool to open the draw. I still had the nice peach notes, brown sugar, dark chocolate, and a little more black coffee. The cigar is medium bodied. The finish is black coffee, a little dark chocolate, and good lingering black pepper. The cigar is pretty good. There is a nice amount of sweetness to go along with the black coffee. I rated the first third 93.
As I moved through the second third (52 minutes) the cigar has not changed. I had the same notes. The finish is unchanged. The cigar is now medium to full bodied. I held the score of 93 for the second third.
The cigar lasted 1 hour 15 minutes. The black coffee rose a little more. Actually a little too much to keep the cigar in balance. The peach notes and brown sugar are rather faint. The dark chocolate is a little more noticeable but the black coffee made a big increase. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is unchanged. With the increase of black coffee I lowered the score to 91. Still, this is a good dark noted cigar.
