Pi Synesthesia Red (6 x 52 toro)

Video review HERE.

(Description taken from Halfwheel.com website)

A year after the original version made its first appearance, Ozgener Family Cigars will show off a new Pi Synesthesia at the 2023 PCA Convention & Trade Show.

The new version is Pi Synesthesia Red, a 6 x 52 toro that uses an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper over a Nicaraguan binder and fillers from Nicaragua. While the original version was made at Tabacalera Pichardo in Nicaragua, the Pi Synesthesia Red will be made by Ernesto Perez-Carrillo Jr.’s Tabacalera La Alianza S.A factory in the Dominican Republic.

Each cigar will have an MSRP of $15, and production is limited to 2,500 boxes of 12 cigars. It is expected to begin shipping in September.

According to a story posted by Cigar Aficionado, Tim Ozgener—founder of Ozgener Family Cigars—wants the cigar to taste like the color red, i.e. spices or peppery things. In an email to halfwheel, Ozgener confirmed the accuracy of the story.

While the two cigars share a similar-looking main band, the secondary bands differ. The original version used a yellow ribbon near the foot; the new cigar uses a red ribbon.

The Pi Synesthesia part of the name references an art series created by the late Cano Ozgener, the father of Tim Ozgener. Cano Ozgener is best known to cigar smokers as the founder of CAO, but after selling CAO, he created OZ Arts, a Nashville-based art institute that occupies the old CAO headquarters. In addition to his work at OZ Arts, Ozgener was a prolific painter.

The cigar looks very nice and has a nice feel in the hand.

The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were a citrus with light apricot, brown sugar, and leathery black coffee. There was black pepper rated at 7 1/2. Decent start.

At the first third (24 minutes) there was a light apricot/citrus note, light brown sugar, and quite a bit of earthy leathery black coffee. The theme is red but nothing red comes to mind smoking this cigar. The finish is leather with good lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium bodied. I rated the first third 90.

As I moved through the second third (1 hour) I had a light apricot with sort of a citrus peel note, very light brown sugar, a lot of earthiness and leathery black coffee. The cigar is medium bodied. The finish is leather with very good lingering black pepper. I rated the second third 87.

The cigar lasted 1 hour 30 minutes. The brown sugar came out much better. There's a light hint of a citrus type note. And a lot of earthiness and leathery black coffee. The cigar is still medium bodied. The finish is unchanged. I'm not sure where they get "all things red" in this cigar. It has so-so flavors and too much earthy leathery black coffee. I liked the improved brown sugar so I raised the final third score to 89.

Overall Score: 88.67
