Lampert Cigars has updated the packaging on its Don Patron line. The company says while the packaging has changed, the blend and cigar ring remain the same.
The Don Patron comes in one size – a 6 x 52. As for the blend, it features an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper over a three-year aged Ecuadorian binder and a combination of three-year aged Dominican and five-year aged Peruvian Pelo del Oro. Production for the Don Patron comes from Tabacos de Costa Rica in Costa Rica. Pricing is set at $15.00 MSRP. The cigars are presented in ten-count boxes.
The cigar is light brown and well made. It has an average feel in the hand.
The test draw after cutting the cap was good with a touch of firmness. The initial flavors at light up were lime, pear, brown sugar, a lot of earthiness, and black coffee. There was black pepper rated at 7 1/2. Not the greatest start for me. Not a big fan of that combination but maybe it will get better.
At the first third (30 minutes) I had the same lime/pear notes and there is even some lime peel. There is a tremendous amount of earthiness. There's a little brown sugar to go along with the lime/pear that helps a little. The cigar is medium bodied. The finish is an earthy lime with below average lingering black pepper. The lime/pear is not doing much for me. I rated the first third 87.
Moving through the second third (1 hour 2 minutes) the cigar slightly improved. The brown sugar has come out a little more with the lime/pear. There is still a lot of earthiness with the black coffee base. The cigar is pretty much full bodied, which is equally as surprising to me. The finish is unchanged. With only a modest improvement I rated the second third 88.
The cigar lasted 1 hour 24 minutes. In the final third the earthiness kept increasing. The cigar is full bodied. The finish is unchanged. While the cigar had a little sweetness from the lime/pear and brown sugar the increased earthiness detracted from those notes. I rated the final third 87. This cigar may appeal to some but it just didn't hit me very positively. With only one sample to review these are my initial thoughts but I can safely say it's not for me. Quite a contrast between this cigar and the 1593 reviewed yesterday.
