Viaje Zombie Red 2024 (5 x 52 Perfecto)

Video review HERE.

(Description taken from Halfwheel.com website)

This marks the first release of the Viaje Zombie Green and Zombie Red since April 2022, when both were shipped without an announcement from the company. Those cigars used the same 5 x 52 perfecto vitola which the line adopted in 2013, with the MSRP set at $12.10 per cigar.

Viaje has not released details about this year’s releases, including price and blend details, but previous Zombie Green releases have used a criollo wrapper, while the Viaje Zombie Red meant the cigar uses a maduro wrapper. They appear to come in the same black, slide-lid, 20-count boxes as previous releases.

Today we are looking at the red. My thoughts on the green will be included in this post.

The cigar is dark and has an average or above feel in the hand.

The test draw after cutting the cap was firm. I used the PerfecDraw to help open the draw. The initial flavors at light up were cedar, brown sugar, and chocolate. There was black pepper rated at 7 1/2 to 8. Nice sweet and dark start.

Contrasting this cigar with the green, which in the past has been a criollo wrapper, it started out with a cittus/cedar, brown sugar, and leather. A little different.

At the first third (30 minutes) the cigar "caught fire". The notes are now citrus, citrus peel, brown sugar, chocolate, and black coffee. The black pepper is still very good. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is black coffee with good lingering black pepper. The notes are sweet and dark. I rated the first third 93.

The first third of the green was rated 90.

As I moved through the second third (1 hour) the chocolate and black coffee increased. The cigar is now full bodied. The finish is unchanged. The sweet notes can't quite keep up with the dark notes. I rated the second third 91.

The second third of the green was rated 88.

The cigar lasted 1 hour 21 minutes. There were more defined chocolate notes and they were sweet. The black coffee pulled back and little and the citrus notes came out a little more. The cigar is full bodied. The finish is chocolate and good lingering black pepper. The cigar improved somewhat. I rated the final third 92. Pretty good cigar.

The final third of the green was rated 87. The overall score of the green was 88.33.

Overall Score: 92
