At the 2024 PCA Convention & Trade Show, there will be two new cigar lines from Rocky Patel Premium Cigars, Inc. One is the new Year of the Dragon, the other is a new regular production line called Gold Label, which I am reviewing today.
Blend-wise, it will use an Ecuadorian habano wrapper over dual binders—Connecticut broadleaf and Connecticut shade—and fillers from the EstelĂ and Jalapa regions of Nicaragua. This blend is produced at the company’s Tabacalera Villa Cuba S.A. (TAVICUSA) factory in EstelĂ.
It will be offered in four sizes:
Rocky Patel Gold Label Half Corona (3 1/2 x 46) — $9.70 (Box of 20, $194) REVIEWED TODAY
Rocky Patel Gold Label Robusto (5 1/2 x 50) — $11 (Box of 20, $220)
Rocky Patel Gold Label Toro (6 1/2 x 54) — $12 (Box of 20, $240)
Rocky Patel Gold Label Sixty (6 x 60) — $13 (Box of 20, $260)
The cigar is dark and well made. It is short and has a light feel in the hand.
The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were citrus, citrus peel, brown sugar, cinnamon, roasted pecans, and black coffee. There was black pepper rated at 7 1/2 to 8. Nice start.
At the first third (17 minutes) the notes were about the same. There's a little more citrus than citrus peel coming out. The brown sugar and cinnamon are nice. The pecans are not as noticeable. There is plenty of black coffee. The cigar is medium bodied. The finish is light, thick brown sugar and very good lingering black pepper. The cigar is quite tasty. I rated the first third 94.
Moving through the second third (33 minutes) not much has changed. The black coffee is slightly up and the sweet notes are slightly down. The pecan notes are back although subtle. The cigar is medium bodied, leaning toward medium to full. The finish is unchanged but a little sweeter. I rated the second third 93.
The cigar lasted 49 minutes. The nice sweetness of the first third is back. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is unchanged. I found this to be a very enjoyable cigar. A nice quick smoke. I rated the final third 94. These are a must-try and are available at smallbatchcigar.com for $50 per 5-pack. Use code tinytim for 10% off and free shipping.
