The third blend in EP Carrillo's six-blend Essence Series has shipped to stores.
Unlike most EP Carrillo cigars, which are made by the company in the Dominican Republic, the new EP Carrillo Honduras is made at the Plasencia family's Tabacos de Oriente factory in Honduras. Blend-wise, the new line uses a Honduran Olancho San AgustÃn that has a two-year fermentation process over a Honduran binder and fillers from Honduras and Nicaragua.
The new line is offered in the same three vitolas as the first two Essence Series blends, the EP Carrillo Maduro and EP Carrillo Sumatra.
Available vitolas:
EP Carrillo Honduras Robusto (5 x 50) — $9.25 (Box of 24, $222)
EP Carrillo Honduras Toro (6 x 52) — $10 (Box of 24, $240) REVIEWED TODAY
EP Carrillo Honduras Gordo (6 x 60) — $10.75 (Box of 24, $258)
“Two years ago, our journey took us beyond the Casa Carrillo factory, leading to the creation of the acclaimed INCH Nicaragua in collaboration with Plasencia's Nicaragua facility,” said Ernesto Perez-Carrillo III in a press release last month. “Today, we're thrilled to unveil the next chapter of our partnership, diving into the heart of Central America with the EP Carrillo Honduras. “This blend embodies the rich heritage and unparalleled expertise of both our families.”
The cigar is nicely made and has an average feel in the hand.
The test drew after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were light pear, brown sugar, quite a bit of a dusty earthiness, and leather. There was black pepper rated at 7 1/2. Decent start.
At the first third (27 minutes) there is a massive amount of earthiness and it's quite dusty. There is much more earthiness than leather. The sweet note now is more of a pear/citrus with brown sugar. What there is of them is nice but they are somewhat light due to the massive earthiness. The finish is dry leather with very good lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium bodied. Even with the massive earthiness the sweet notes are good enough to score the first third 92.
As I moved through the second third (53 minutes) the earthiness went nuclear. The leather has also increased. The sweet notes are a faint brown sugar and citrus peel. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is unchanged. The cigar has lost a lot of appeal. I rated the second third 86.
The cigar lasted 1 hour 27 minutes. There was somewhat of an improvement. There is more of a citrus note with a little brown sugar and they are somewhat increased. There is still plenty of earthiness and leather. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is unchanged. The cigar got marginally better. I rated the final third 88. This cigar is too earthy for me but if you would like to give it a try go to smallbatchcigar.com where they are $50 per 5-pack. Use code tinytim for 10% off and free shipping.
