HDA was born when Andray and Zack set off on a journey to create bold flavor from the world’s best tobacco. In everything they do, they never lose site of their military roots.
Their cigars are made in James Brown's Oveja Negra factory.
Andray F. McCuien
Andray became a cigar enthusiast during a tour to Iraq in 2008; just one of many stops in his Army career. After a hard day, he found nothing was better than a great smoke with fellow comrades. Since retiring from active service as a Signal Chief Warrant Officer 3, he has made it his mission to create a cigar brand that signifies the unity and camaraderie experienced with his brothers and sisters in arms.
Zack Van Ginkel
Air Force veteran with a career focused in aviation, cigars are more than just a hobby – they’re a passion. HDA provided the perfect opportunity to transform that passion into a career. He is dedicated to maintaining the highest standards for HDA, focusing on what he believes are the two most important cigar qualities: construction and flavor.
The Veiled Mutiny is a cigar that incorporates tobacco from Jalapa and Ometepe, embraced by a Maduro wrapper, concealing its true strength until it erupts with a powerful intensity. A rebellion against the ordinary, it sneaks up on the palate, delivering a bold complexity that defies expectations and leaves a lasting impression of defiance and satisfaction. Prepare for the clandestine uprising of flavor that is Veiled Mutiny.
VITOLA: Toro 6×54
WRAPPER: Ecuadorian Maduro
BINDER: Nicaraguan
FILLER: Nicaraguan
The cigar is well made and dark. It has a nice feel in the hand.
The test draw after cutting the cap was good with a touch of firmness. The initial flavors at light up were sharp apple, brown sugar, light tanned leather, and light black coffee. At the light up the notes are not very maduro-like. There was black pepper rated at 7 to 7 1/2.
At the first third (31 minutes) I basically had the same notes. The black coffee is a little more prominent. It has a little earthiness and a little leather. The finish is apple and good lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium bodied. I rated the first third 92.
Moving through the second third (1 hour) the notes remained the same but the black coffee is more elevated. There is not as much sweetness on the apple and there is some bitterness. The cigar is now medium to full bodied. The finish is apple and black coffee with very good lingering black pepper. The sweetness decreased and the black coffee elevated. I rated the second third 90.
The cigar lasted 1 hour 29 minutes. The brown sugar came back to help the apple notes. There is still a lot of black coffee but the elevated brown sugar helped. The cigar is close to full bodied. The finish is hints of apple and a lot of black coffee. Almost to the espresso level. There was very good lingering black pepper on the finish. The cigar improved back to a score of 92. This is the best of the three offerings so far. Next up, Cataclysm.
