Spy Glass 2 Habano Boxpress (5 x 52)

Video review HERE.

(Description provided by Kevin Pardow)

The Spy Glass series are test blends created by Kevin Parow, founder of New England Cigar Militia. Today we look at the Spy Glass 2 Habano Boxpress. It is a 5 x 52 robusto that features an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, Ecuadorian Sumatra binder, and Nicaraguan and Peruvian filler. The cigars are produced in an undisclosed Nicaraguan factory. They are available at beyondthecigar.com.

The cigar is medium brown and box pressed. It has a nice feel in the hand.

The test draw after cutting the cap was very good. There is no lag time to get the initial flavors. You get them as soon as you light the cigar. The initial flavors at light up were sweet orange citrus, brown sugar, lots of cinnamon, and earthy black coffee. There are hints of caramel around the brown sugar. There was black pepper rated at 7 1/2 to 8. Very good start.

At the first third (20 minutes) I had the same notes. The orange citrus is pronounced and very sweet. The brown sugar adds sweetness and there is a lot of cinnamon. The earthy black coffee is in the perfect amount. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is hints of citrus, a little earthiness, and very light black coffee with very good lingering black pepper. This is beyond good. It is fantastic. I rated the first third 96.

As I moved through the second third (47 minutes) I had the same notes. The caramel notes are coming out more. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is unchanged. The cigar continues to be fantastic. Very little change. I held the score of 96.

The cigar lasted 1 hour 9 minutes. I had the same notes. This cigar changes very little from light up to the end. It says at about medium to full bodied. The finish is unchanged. It started out great and stayed that way. If this is a test blend Kevin needs to get this nationwide and fast. The link above will take you to these cigars and if you agree with my palate you should go there now before they're gone. I hope he made a lot of these because they will jump off the shelf. I held the score of 96. Definitely put this one on your must-try list.

He sent me 3 blends to review. This was the first. It set a very high mark. I will review the other two blends next weekend.

Overall Score: 96
