FOX 13 Celebrates Labor Day with J.C. Newman Cigar Co.

Yesterday, FOX 13 Tampa Bay invited fourth-generation cigar maker Drew Newman to join its live morning show on Labor Day  to discuss how hundreds of thousands of cigar workers built the City of Tampa and made it world famous as the “Fine Cigar Capital of the World.” He described the art of hand rolling premium cigars, and how J.C. Newman handcrafts premium cigars today the same way it did a century ago.

Newman also shared how Labor Day and many workplace protections were the result of a cigar maker named Samuel Gompers. Before becoming the most famous American labor leader, Gompers was a cigar roller who led the Cigar Makers Union in New York City and founded the American Federation of Labor (now AFL-CIO) in 1886. Gompers championed the 8-hour workday, prohibitions against child labor, workplace safety laws, and workers compensation, among others.

Newman invited the public to visit the historic El Reloj cigar factory in Tampa to see how J.C. Newman is keeping America’s historic cigar tradition alive. J.C. Newman’s cigar museum is free and open to the public on weekdays. Visitors can also book a guided factory tour, cigar-rolling class, tobacco tasting class, or a Cigars 101 class on jcnewman.com.
