Here is August's cigar edition in the Eddie Ortega Wild Bunch series. Unfortunately I don't have any information on the cigar but based on the very dark wrapper I'd say it's a maduro. This is a lancero style cigar, long and small ring gauge.

 

 

Did you take a good look at the face on the band? Doesn't that look a lot like Eddie himself? I know that Eddie loves his maduros so that would explain a lot.

 

 

The cap is finished in a pigtail and the cigar has nice density. It feels heavy in the hand.

 

 

The test draw after cutting the cap was a bit firm. The initial flavors were a lot of espresso notes, earth, and dry cedar. The espresso is the primary flavor, followed by earth tones, and dry cedar with a touch of sweetness.



About 3/4 inch in the espresso and earth are still the dominant flavors but the sweeter flavors which were originally dry cedar are now starting to taste a lot like nutmeg and they are becoming stronger. That was an improvement for me. The pepper is very good and rated at an 8. The neat thing about the pepper is how it lingers on the finish. You can feel it on the back of your throat. The finish is very short. It's hard to pin down but it tastes like a cream with coffee influences. The finish could be considered clean. The cigar is medium bodied and I could see it going fuller.

Just past the midpoint the only thing that seems to be changing about the cigar is the nutmeg changes back to a cedar here and there. Those flip flop periodically. The espresso and earth are still the predominant flavors. The finish is a little longer now. It's a toasted cream with a lot of coffee notes and the lingering pepper remains very good. I would call the pepper a black pepper. The cigar is still medium bodied and I don't think it will get any fuller. The deep espresso notes give it a false impression of going full bodied but it's actually medium.





At the end, this cigar is all about espresso and earth tones. There is just a touch of cedar and/or nutmeg, whichever you get at the time. The cedar/nutmeg made a move forward but it could not compete with the espresso and earth. If you like heavy espresso cigars this would be a great cigar for you. If you need a good after dinner cigar where  you've had a rich dessert this would be a great cigar for you.
