Patina Cigars, the brand that is a partnership between Mombacho Cigars and Mo Maali has shipped its first two cigars, the Patina Connecticut and the Patina Habano.

Maali and Mombacho announced Patina Cigars last year. A soft launch was held at Casa de Montecristo Chicago.  Since then Maali has also joined Mombacho Cigars as that company’s National Sales Manager.

Patina cigars are produced at Mombacho Cigars at the company’s Casa Favilli factory located in Granada, Nicaragua. What is significant about the Patina releases is that this is the first time that Mombacho is using tobaccos outside of Nicaragua.

“Patina is the example of how blending is an extremely complex process! The Connecticut will completely change the idea of what a mild cigar should be and the habano will surprise with its unique profile. Both cigars are tremendously different of what we are used to smoking and we are very excited about their release,” said Mombacho President and Master Blender Claudio Sgroi. in a press release.

“Patina is an oxidation process that, over time, produces a green film over bronze or copper (i.e. a statue or building). In the same spirit, our experiences in life shape our opinions, attitudes and beliefs. Just as those buildings underneath the Patina retain their original character, we too as human beings will always be ourselves at our core. No matter what happens in life, always be true to yourself,” commented Maali “Learning about tobacco and blending from Claudio is like learning how to paint from Leonardo Da Vinci. It is a privilege to have my cigars produced at Casa Favilli and I am excited for the journey ahead.”

The cigar has a good feel in the hand which I hope translates into a long burn time.

The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors were a little different for me; a candy-like orange citrus which reminded me of a baby aspirin, a touch of whipping cream, a touch of chocolate, and the flavor of lead (not something you desire in a cigar). There was a white pepper which I rated at a 6. I am hopeful the lead flavor will go away and to be hones I expect it to but we'll have to wait and see.

At the first third point (35 minutes) the cigar is burning evenly and slowly. You can just about throw out the initial flavors. They have changed quite a bit. Now you have the candy-like orange citrus that almost has carbonated notes, brown sugar, cinnamon, and sweet chocolate. I not longer had the lead flavor which is a big plus. The finish is a straight sweet cream with a modest amount of lingering white pepper. The cigar is medium bodied. The flavors settled down into a nice combination and it happened a little before the first third point. With the revision in the flavors the score for the first third is a 91.

At the 2/3 point (1 hour 9 minutes) I got a pronounced coffee base. I also got raw almonds on the end of the draw. The candy-like orange citrus is affected by the heavy coffee notes decreasing some of their sweetness. You also still have the cinnamon, brown sugar and chocolate. The pepper is unchanged. The finish is still a sweet cream but there are also some light chocolate notes. The cigar is slowly moving up in strength. It is now a touch above medium bodied but not quite medium to full bodied. With the pronounced coffee and raw almond notes the 2/3 score dropped to a 90 but it's still a good cigar.

The cigar lasted 1 hour 35 minutes which is a long burn time for a toro. The nice feel in the had at the outset did transfer into a nice burn time. The flavors merged into a nice mix. They were the same as the last segment but in a more even mix. The cigar moved to a definite medium to full bodied status. Although this cigar started off a little shaky it settled down into a nice cigar with nice flavors. This was a totally new cigar to me but I purchased it at a local shop so look for them and give them a try. The final third score is also a 90.

Overall Score: 90
