At the 2019 IPCPR Trade Show, Mombacho Cigars launched the Diplomatico by Mombacho line. As the name indicates, it’s a cigar that is designed to be paired with Diplomatico Rum.
Diplmoatico Rum is produced in Venezuela, and Mombacho Cigars are produced in Grenada, Nicaragua. The collaboration creates a pairing between two countries that have certainly had their share of problems over the past two years.
Mombacho Cigars Master Blender Claudio Sgroi told Cigar Coop that it was a challenge to come up with blend to pair with the Diplomatico Rum. Because of the deep flavors of the rum, Sgroi worked on a blend that was also deep in flavor – and one that is spicier than the typical Mombacho profile.

The cigar is well made and has an average feel in the hand for a robusto.
The test draw after cutting the cap was excellent. The initial flavors at light up were interesting; you start with a cedar/orange peel mix, quickly followed by brown sugar, caramel, nutmeg, and a capsule of concentrated orange citrus that is quite sweet. There is a light black coffee base at this point. There was black pepper rated at 7 1/2. The start is sweet but the cigar has different textures and levels of sweetness.
At 3/4 inch in (13 minutes) the cigar settled down from the varied and interesting start. Now the notes are light cedar, lots of juicy orange citrus, brown sugar, caramel, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a nice black coffee base.
At the first third (23 minutes) the cigar is approximately what it was at the 3/4" point but some of the deep richness is gone. The same flavor notes are in play. The cigar is medium bodied. The finish is cedar, caramel, and nutmeg with average lingering black pepper. The cigar is nice at this point but not overly amazing. I rated the first third at 93.
As I moved through the second third (48 minutes) the cigar has lost a bit but the black pepper is amazing. I am loving the large amount of black pepper. The cigar's flavors have become very average. But the massive amount of black pepper is enough to hold the score up. Now I have cedar (no more citrus), caramel, brown sugar, cinnamon, light nutmeg, and an increased amount of black coffee. The cigar is now medium to full bodied. The finish is now more of a nutmeg, cedar, caramel with very nice lingering black pepper. It has increased on the finish. I rated the second third 92.
The cigar lasted 1 hour 5 minutes. In the final third the nutmeg came out. The cedar, brown sugar, and caramel decreased. The black coffee base is up and noticeable. The black pepper, which had been holding the cigar's score up in the second third, has decreased somewhat. The finish is unchanged. I rated the final third 90.
Overall Score: 91.67
