Viaje has shipped a pair of new Skull and Bones series, both inspired by Marvel Comic’s Punisher character.
The two cigars—Viaje Skull and Bones Frank Castle, and Skull and Bones The Punisher—are both 6 1/4 x 54 vitolas that use what the company says is “a proprietary blend of Nicaraguan tobaccos.” The Punisher appears to use a lighter wrapper, while Frank Castle uses a darker wrapper. (I believe this is backwards. The Punisher appears to be the darker of the two.) A spokesperson said the cigars are made in Nicaragua but did not name a factory.
Each cigar has an MSRP of $13 and will ship in bundles of 25. The spokesperson did not answer a question about how many are being released.
In the Marvel universe, Frank Castle is a marine veteran who watches his family get killed. After that, he decides to fight crime using violence, earning him the Punisher moniker. The character was created in the 1970s and has been featured in a variety of comics, movies and television shows, most recently as the title character in the now-canceled Netflix series that aired in 2017-2018.
Today we look at The Punisher.
The cigar, as I said above, appears to be a shade darker than the Frank Castle. It has a very dense feel in the hand.
The test draw after cutting the cap was ok but I decided to use my PerfecDraw tool to improve it. The intial flavors at light up were plum, citrus peel, brown sugar, nutmeg, and black coffee. There was black pepper rate at 7 1/2 to 8. Not a bad start.
At the first third (47 minutes) the ash was still intact and the cigar is burning very evenly. The flavors now are a tangy cedar, peach, brown sugar, nutmeg, black coffee, and at the base of those flavors near the black coffee were walnut notes. The finish is nutmeg and a little cedar with good lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium bodied leaning toward medium to full. I rated the first third 91.
Moving through the second third (1 hour 33 minutes) the cigar continues to burn perfectly. In the second third the cigar has gotten more earthy. The nutmeg and black coffee are elevating. I still had cedar, faint peach notes, and a little brown sugar to go along with the earthier notes. The cigar is now medium to full bodied. The finish is quite earthy with black coffee. The lingering black pepper is very good. Even with the elevated earthy notes the cigar is still good. I rated the second third 89.
The cigar lasted an amazing 2 hours 9 minutes. The cigar increased slightly in earthiness. I still had cedar, peach, and brown sugar. Since the cigar had such a long burn time I cleared it several times which helped the flavors. The nutmeg and earthy black coffee are still quite prominent. The cigar is now full bodied. The finish has some peach, nutmeg, and very good lingering black pepper. The cigar lost some of it's enjoyment but it's still not bad. I rated the final third 87.
