Aganorsa Leaf has announced the 2021 edition of its Aniversario release. This years’s release will feature the company’s proprietary Shade Grown Corojo Maduro wrapper in two vitolas; a 6 x 54 toro and a 5 3/8 x 48 short churchill.
Today we look at the toro version.
It has an MSRP of $13.75 per cigar and is limited to 1,500 boxes of 10 cigars.
Both cigars are Nicaraguan puros using a shade grown maduro wrapper. They are rolled at AGANORSA’s Leaf small factory in its Miami headquarters. Previously, the brand was known as Casa Fernández Aniversario.
The cigar is well made and comes in a soft box press.
The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were chocolate, citrus peel, brown sugar, nutmeg, and dark roasted black coffee. There was black pepper rated at 8. The pepper on the retrohale is amazing. A nice dark, sweet start.
At the first third (45 minutes) there was a nice addition. Now I had nice chocolate notes, citrus peel, a flash or two of actual orange citrus, brown sugar, nutmeg, and quite a bit of dark roasted black coffee. The black pepper is still very good. The finish is chocolate and citrus peel with good lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium bodied, leaning toward medium to full. The cigar is checking a lot of boxes. I rated the first third 94.
As I moved through the second third (1 hour 16 minutes) the chocolate is more like a dark chocolate with minimal sweetness, elevated citrus peel, a drop or two of actual citrus, brown sugar, and a lot of black coffee. I didn't detect the nutmeg in the second third. The finish is unsweetened dark chocolate, nutmeg, and a little brown sugar. The lingering black pepper is very good. The cigar is now full bodied. The increased citrus peel doesn't appeal to me but it has not done the cigar in. It's still quite enjoyable but I'm lowering the score to 93 at this point.
The cigar lasted 1 hour 40 minutes. The cigar kept on the same path with a little more elevation of citrus peel. There was also dark chocolate, a little brown sugar, and a lot of black coffee. The cigar is full bodied. The finish is unchanged. One negative to note is the ash is extremely brittle. It will drop at any time so be aware. Another point to remember is the bands are not easy to remove even when you let the heat approach them. I had trouble removing the lower band and it almost burnt entirely! Looking at the big picture this is a very good cigar but the increased citrus peel notes were a downer for me. I rated the final third 92.
