Viaje Friends and Family Merci (5 1/4 x 54)

Viaje has announced that they have released another batch of one of its most limited cigar lines, the Friends and Family.

It will return in the Merci vitola, a 5 1/4 x 54 robusto extra vitola that debuted in February 2015 and returned in January 2016.

Friends and Family was started as a private blend for company founder Andre Farkas to give to his friends and family, though it became a retail release in 2012. The company has been very tight-lipped about it, declining to disclose any details about the blend or where the cigars are made. This appears to be the first release of the Friends and Family line since October 2018.

The cigar is very dark and has a nice feel in the hand. It has a closed foot.

The test draw after cutting the cap was good considering it had a closed foot. The initial flavors at light up were orange citrus, light citrus peel, brown sugar, a little nutmeg, and light black coffee. There was black pepper rated at 7 to 7 1/2. Pretty good start.

At the first third (23 minutes) I still had the citrus and brown sugar, quite a bit of nutmeg, dry cocoa, and more black coffee. The finish had a hint of citrus and black coffee with very good lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium bodied. At this point the cigar is pretty good. I rated the first third 92.

Moving through the second third (43 minutes) the citrus notes are gone. The brown sugar is still there, along with the dry cocoa and black coffee. It was basically a cup of black coffee with some sugar and a little dry cocoa thrown in for good measure. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is a little brown sugar and black coffee with very good lingering black pepper. Normally I do not like cigars that are heavy on black coffee and not much else but the coffee notes have a very good flavor and the brown sugar makes it nice. It's still not a cigar that I would typically choose but it's not bad. I rated the second third 89.

The cigar lasted 1 hour 1 minute. Well, the cigar got to the level of the second third and decided to stay there. I had the same notes; black coffee, brown sugar, and cocoa. The finish is unchanged. The cigar is still medium to full bodied. I held the score of 89 for the final third. This isn't a bad cigar, it just doesn't have a lot of complexity. If you just ate 4 slices of cheesecake this would be a great cigar.

Overall Score: 90
