(Description taken from Halfwheel.com website)

The next cigar in the K by Karen Berger series will be made at Tabacalera AJ Fernandez de Nicaragua S.A.

It’s called the K by Karen Berger 25th Anniversary by AJ Fernandez and it will come in a single 6 x 52 toro size that will use what the company is describing as a Connecticut habano broadleaf wrapper over a Mexican San Andrés binder and fillers from Nicaragua. It will be limited to 1,500 boxes of 20 cigars. The MSRP is set at $16 per cigar.

As for the name, it references the more than 25 years that Karen Berger and her late husband, Henry “Kiki” Berger, have worked in the cigar business. Berger was one of the first Americans to come to Estelí and established a cigar-making operation, Tabacalera Estelí, as well as a farm.

I met Don Kiki back in July of 2005 at a cigar shop called Paradise Cigars in Charlotte, NC. He passed away on Monday, September 22, 2014.

The cigar is dark and well made. It has a nice feel in the hand.

The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were a lemony citrus, brown sugar, citrus peel, nutmeg, and a lot of black coffee, very close to espresso. There was black pepper rated at 8. Nice sweet start with plenty of black coffee.

At the first third (32 minutes) I still had the lemony citrus, brown sugar, some citrus peel, a little more nutmeg, and a little less black coffee. The sweeter notes are a little ahead of the nutmeg and black coffee. The black pepper has toned down to around 7. The finish is nutmeg, hints of citrus and brown sugar, chocolate with good lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium to full bodied. I rated the first third 94.

Moving through the second third (1 hour 4 minutes) the black coffee made a move up. I still had citrus. Not necessarily lemon but definitely a citrus flavor. There was also brown sugar, chocolate, and black coffee. The cigar is full bodied. The finish is hints of citrus, chocolate, and black coffee with very good lingering black pepper. The cigar took a little turn to the dark side but the chocolate has some sweetness and helps. I rated the second third 93.

The cigar lasted 1 hour 30 minutes. I now had a pronounced citrus with some lemony aspects, brown sugar, chocolate, and black coffee which pulled back a little. The cigar is full bodied. The finish is citrus, chocolate, and black coffee with very good lingering black pepper. The cigar made a little improvement so I went back to 94 for the final third. This is a good cigar. Look for them and give them a try.

Overall Score: 93.67
