Chillin’ Moose and its beefy sidekick Bull Moose will soon welcome a Connecticut “cousin” called Shady Moose, a new line of cigars made with an Ecuadorian Connecticut shade wrapper, a first for the Chillin’ Moose franchise.
Shipping to retailers on March 1, Shady Moose will launch as a full-time line with three new sizes, including the first Toro for the growing Chillin’ Moose trio.
Handcrafted in Honduras at the HATSA factory, Shady Moose is a six-country blend wrapped in Ecuadorian Connecticut, with a Mexican binder and a selection of long filler tobacco from the US, Colombia, the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua.
The mellow-to-medium-bodied blend is stout-hearted, with slightly spicy white pepper notes balanced by hints of earth, wood and cream.
“With Shady Moose, we built a great, anytime, anywhere blend that takes the smooth-smoking properties of a Connecticut Shade cigar and amps it up with the right amount of complexity and spice. And we didn’t stop there. We added in the cool Moose imagery and locked in an unbelievable price point. Now we’re waiting for Shady Moose to take a run at the internet, just like Bull Moose did last year. We’re ready for it. The question is…are you?” said John Hakim, brand manager of Chillin’ Moose.
Shady Moose cigars will be distributed by Forged Cigar Company.
The cigars will be packed in boxes containing 20 cigars.

The cigar is medium brown and has an average feel in the hand.
The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were citrus peel, a little brown sugar, earthiness, and black coffee. There was black pepper rated at 7 to 7 1/2.
At the first third (22 minutes) not much has changed. There is a lot of citrus peel with some brown sugar; not a lot, earthiness, and some leathery black coffee. The cigar is medium bodied. The finish is citrus peel, earthiness, and average lingering black pepper. There's a little too much citrus peel and not enough brown sugar to counteract it. I rated the first third 87.
As I moved through the second third (49 minutes) the cigar made a minor improvement. The brown sugar modestly increased. The other notes are still in play and were unchanged. The cigar is still medium bodied. The finish is unchanged. I rated the second third 88.
The cigar lasted 1 hour 10 minutes. In the final third the brown sugar decreased while the earthiness and leather black coffee rose. The cigar is medium bodied, leaning toward medium to full. The finish is citrus peel, hints of brown sugar, earthiness, and leathery black coffee with good lingering black pepper. I rated the final third 85. For $5 give it a try and let me know what you think.
