For the 10th release of its Las Calaveras series, Crowned Heads is going back to broadleaf.

The Nashville-based company has announced Las Calaveras Edición Limitada 2023, the next release in its annual, limited edition Las Calaveras Series. Like all Las Calaveras before it, this year’s release will be made at My Father Cigars S.A. For only the second time in the series—the other was 2016—the blend will use a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper over a blend of Nicaraguan tobaccos.

Since 2016, Crowned Heads released four vitolas of Las Calaveras each year: three are sold in 24-count boxes, while a fourth size is only offered in a four-cigar sampler that contains one of each vitola. That trend will continue this year.

Las Calaveras Edición Limitada 2023 LC50 (5 x 50) — $12.95 (Box of 24, $310.80) — 1,500 Boxes of 24 Cigars + 3,000 Samplers of 1 Cigar (39,000 Total Cigars)

Las Calaveras Edición Limitada 2023 LC54 (5 5/8 x 54) — $14.95 (Box of 24, $358.80) — 1,500 Boxes of 24 Cigars + 3,000 Samplers of 1 Cigar (39,000 Total Cigars)

Las Calaveras Edición Limitada 2023 Belicoso Fino (5 1/2 x 52) — 3,000 Samplers of 1 Cigar (3,000 Total Cigars)

The sampler has an MSRP of $54.95.

“We’re bringing the Broadleaf back for ’23,”said Jon Huber, co-founder of Crowned Heads, in a press release.. “I’ve held My Father Cigars and the Garcia family in such high regard, especially when it came to their use of Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper and the resultant blend expressions. The 2023 Las Calaveras blend has so much going on in terms of what you’d expect from a My Father Broadleaf blend, everything from pepper to chocolate to earth, all impeccably and consistently balanced. We’re also featuring a first in the 2023 Las Calaveras Sampler, as this will be the first time we’ve featured a Belcoso Fino as the Sampler exclusive vitola, and the first time we’ve produced that vitola with My Father Cigars.”

Las Calaveras is an annual limited edition for the company that pays tribute to those close to the company’s personnel who have lost their lives. Each year has been a different blend, offered in either three or four sizes. The name comes from La Calavera Catrina, a zinc etching by José Guadalupe Posada. This year’s release is dedicated to four people who have passed, each of whom is identified by their initials included on the band.

The cigar looks good and has a nice feel in the hand.

The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were citrus/pear, brown sugar, sprinkling of cinnamon, and black coffee. There was black pepper rated at 7 1/2 to 8. Dark start with some sweetness.

At the first third (38 minutes) the sweet notes are a little more pronounced. For the most part it's pear, a little citrus, brown sugar, light cinnamon, earthy black coffee, and a little hint of dark chocolate. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is mostly pear with a little dark chocolate and good lingering black pepper. The cigar has a lot of darkness but adequate sweetness. I rated the first third 93.

Moving through the second third (1 hour 14 minutes) the black coffee rose. The notes now are faint pear, hints of citrus, light brown sugar, and quite a bit of earthy black coffee. The cigar is full bodied. The finish has hints of pear and black coffee and very good lingering black pepper. The cigar got darker but it's still pretty good. I rated the second third 92.

The cigar lasted a very impressive 1 hour 40 minutes. The cigar had a nice bounce back in the sweet category. I had light pear, much improved brown sugar, and earthy black coffee. Most of the sweetness comes from the brown sugar and the black coffee pulled back a little. The black pepper is 8 1/2 minimum. The cigar is quite full bodied. The finish is pear with light underlying black coffee and some of the best lingering black pepper I've ever experienced. There is a ton of lingering black pepper. I rated the final third 93. This is a pretty good edition of the Las Calaveras. For comparison over the years, the 2021 LC48 received a score of 94 so it remains the best so far.

Overall Score: 92.67
