K by Karen Berger is now shipping boxes of K-Fire, a 6 x 52 box-pressed toro made up of a Mexican San Andrés wrapper covering a habano binder from Jalapa, Nicaragua and a filler blend of tobaccos grown in Nicaragua. The regular production cigars are being rolled at the company’s Estelí Cigars S.A. factory in Nicaragua and have an MSRP of $14.50 each, with 20-count boxes priced at $290.
According to the company, the name of the new release refers to the temperature of 150 degrees, which is the temperature that pilónes of tobacco—which typically weigh between 3,500 and 4,000 pounds—can reach while the tobacco is being processed.
The cigar is dark and well made. It has an average feel in the hand.
The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were sweet pink grapefruit, brown sugar, toffee, cinnamon, and black coffee. There was black pepper rated at 8. Nice start.
At the first third (22 minutes) the grapefruit notes are now more of a citrus and cedar. There's a lot of toffee notes. The black coffee is now more of a dark chocolate. The cigar is medium bodied. The finish is dark chocolate with a slight hint of citrus and good lingering black pepper. The toffee is mixing well with the dark chocolate. I rated the first third 95.
Moving through the second third (52 minutes) I am impressed with how the toffee is hanging in there. The dark chocolate rose quite a bit in this section. The citrus/cedar notes slightly decreased. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is citrus and dark chocolate with very good lingering black pepper. I rated the second third 94.
The cigar lasted 1 hour 11 minutes. There is quite a bit of toffee and dark chocolate at this point. There are also nice cinnamon notes. The citrus is faint. The toffee and dark chocolate make a nice flavor. The black pepper is still hovering around 8. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is hints of citrus, toffee, and dark chocolate with very good lingering black pepper. The cigar made some changes but I held the score of 94. This is another very good cigar from Karen Berger.
