It’s once again time for Viaje to celebrate company founder Andre Farkas’ birthday, and the company is doing it with a new Collector’s Edition version of its Birthday Blend line.

The Collector’s Edition designation, which has been used on several of Viaje’s releases, designates a cigar as a one-and-done release and indicates that there have been some changes made to the usual details of a cigar. In this case, the company has said that it has modified the blend and shape “ever so slightly to give it a special take on what has become an annual favorite.”

While the company has not yet replied to an e-mail asking about what those tweaks are, it did reply to a question on its Instagram post about the cigars being maduros with a simple “yes.” The company has previously released versions of the Birthday Blend using a Mexican San Andrés maduro wrapper.

The cigar is very dark and oily. It has a nice feel in the hand.

The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were a lemony citrus, brown sugar, cinnamon, and a lot of black coffee. There was black pepper rated at 8. Dark start with some sweetness.

At the first third (33 minutes) I had the same notes but there are now dark chocolate notes also. The cigar is medium bodied. The finish is black coffee with very good lingering black pepper. The cigar is not at the level of sweetness I would like for this much dark notes but it's not bad. I rated the first third 93.

Moving through the second third (1 hour 2 minutes) the notes were the same but the dark chocolate and black coffee have increased a little. The black pepper is still very good. The cigar is full bodied. The finish is unchanged. The cigar is getting a little darker but it still has not gotten out of hand. I rated the second third 92.

The cigar lasted 1 hour 30 minutes. The notes now are brown sugar, dark chocolate, and black coffee. There is a lot of dark chocolate and black coffee. Your only sweet notes are coming from brown sugar. The cigar is very full bodied. The finish is unchanged. At this point the cigar is "on the line" with me. I rated the final third 90. This is a pretty good cigar but very dark.

Overall Score: 91.67
